At bedtime, the students could hear Victor doing his usual countdown to curfew routine, announcing the number of minutes left until lights-out. Victor finished with his trademark routine. "You have five minutes precisely, and then I want to hear a pin drop." As he did every night, he took a pin out of his top left coat pocket and held it high. The pin fell and hit the floor with a small, metallic clink that echoed ever so softly.

Later that night, dark shadows played over Anubis House. In his office, Victor was painting Corbiere, his stuffed raven, a deeper shade of black. When he was done, he locked the door and drew the blinds. He placed Joy's phone on his desk and then took a small arching hammer and leveled it until he pounded it to pieces. He then took the remaining pieces and threw them in his trash can.

"Now Corbiere," Victor said to his dead stuffed Raven. "We don't have to worry about these miscreants." he finished.
