KHELONE (Chelone) was a nymph of Mount Khelydorea (Rich in Tortoises) in Arkadia (southern Greece). When she haughtily refused a summons to attend the wedding of Zeus and Hera, the god Hermes was blamed and took the heat from Zeus. In a rage, he flew to the nymph's house and grabbed her by the throat throwing her into the pond in her yard. When she surfaced, she had a face similar to that of a reptile; hermes had transformed her into a lazy, stay-at-home tortoise. It's like the old saying, "There's no place like home!"
