Your Pov.
Blood and Mud, everywhere. People coughing, dying by diseases more than bullets. Sound, only gun shoots and artillery shells hitting the ground. This is what I have to deal with on an everyday basis. I barely get any sleep in these trenches.
Today was July 1st, 1916. A massage artillery barrage was hitting the German trenches. It was the day that we're going over the top, fighting for the Somme. This wasn't my first rodeo, but maybe my last. I don't know how I last this long but soon my luck will run out. I'm a Lieutenant of my platoon, and we're heading first into No Mans Land. My platoon and I lined up in the trenches. I can tell my platoon is nervous, this is the first time they're going over the top. My old platoon was wiped out, I was the only survivor. I put my hand one on one of my platoon soldier's shoulder.
"Be brave, we're doing this for the French back at Verdun and what's behind us," I told him confidently. "I-I... know sir... I-I.." His voice sounds scared and nervous.
"I know, you're nervous," I cut him off. "But I can tell their's a warrior in ya," I told him. "T-thanks sir," He said more confidently.
"What's your name?" I asked him. "It's Jacob sir," He said saluting. "No need for the salute, and call me (Y/n). Do you have a family back home?" I asked him. "Y-yes Sir... I have a wife and a kid back home," He said taking out a picture of his wife and son. "H-how about you Sir- I mean (Y/n)?" He asked me.
"Yes, I have friends and family back home," I told him. "N-no wife or child back home?" He asked. I looked away when he said that. "No," I said. "O-oh... was that question to personal?" He asked concerned.
"No," I said turning to look at him. "I never really sat down and had a relationship with a girl, I was always looking for an adventure."
"Well, this war is sure an adventure, right?" He said happily but also nervously. "Yeah..." I said quietly.
We ended our conversation there and waited until the artillery barrage will stop. Slowly the artillery barrage stopped. They hope that the artillery barrage will destroy the barbed wire and disrupted the enemy's trenches and bunkers. Soon other men join our line up beside us. Ready our selves to take on the German line.
It was 7:30 a.m and the whistle blew, this is the time to charge. I quickly put on my gas mask and we all screamed on top of our lungs and climbed up the trenches into No Mans Land. Instantly we got hit by machine-gun fire and explosive shells. Men left and right fall no stop as we pushed on.
I took cover in a crater that was made by an artillery shell and see Jacob holding his rifle close to him. "Jacob, you okay?" I asked him. He nods, "Y-yes.. sir..." He said scared. I looked over the crater, with bullets flying over. Seeing men getting mowed down like grass. "Where's the rest of the platoon?" I asked Jacob.
"D-dead sir! They all dead!" He shouted. "Fuck!" I shouted slamming my fist into the ground. "We got to move," I said.
"No, I'm staying here!" He shouted at me fearing for his life. "Then you already dead," I told him picking him up. "Move up!" I ordered him. We move up, moving to crater to the crater to provide cover. We only hear the machine-gun fire, explosive shells and men screaming. As we got closer, I notice that the barbed wire was still up blocking our way in. I then notice a German soldier aiming his rifle at Jacob. I quickly aimed and fire my Lee Enfield III and fire. Killing a German instantly with a headshot. Machine gun fire slowly moved towards us. "Jacob! Get Down!" I shouted pushing him down with me in another crater.
