Aziraphale was gone. How? After Armageddon Gabriel and Beelzebub found out they swapped places during they execution and they were mad so they burned down the bookshop using hell fire and lightning from a holy water storm.
They thought both Crowley and Aziraphale was in the bookshop but only Aziraphale was due to him reorganization the bookshop and Crowley staying at his flat.
Crowley found out about the fire but the rain & fire was gone before he got there and in the ashes all he found of Aziraphale was his scarf...
