                PROLOGUE

By the time December had rolled around, I was practically jumping for joy. Although I did love Christmas dearly, it wasn’t the season that was making me giddy, it was the countdown I had been keeping since I came home from the hospital—and it had finally reached zero.

The bell rung, signaling the last class of the last day before winter break, and I sighed in relief. Everybody stood up and shuffled out of the classroom, except for me. I stood in my itchy sweater and plaid skirt for a moment, smirking to myself, because I was the only one (other than my parents and teachers) who knew. Nobody said goodbye, nobody wished me good luck, because they were all clueless.

I, Everett Meyers, was leaving this hell hole once and for all, and it was going to be fucking fantastic.
