14. What's Going On?

Without hesitation, Thor jumped up and slapped the big red button on the wall, opening the back of the helicopter up. Déjà vu swept through me as I rushed to the opening. Diana hadn’t moved, and looked stunned as when we prepared to leap out as the helicopter hovered a couple of hundred metres above the Helicarrier.

“Where’s Stark?” I suddenly asked over the wind as it occurred to me that he wasn’t with us.

Peter was pulling off his torn suit, and revealed his well-known Spiderman costume, while Thor was beginning to spin his hammer in the air, ready for action.

“Stark said he’d catch up with us. He wanted to check out his new skyscraper in Edinburgh,” Peter rolled his eyes before pulling his mask on, “He’s determined to ‘crack’ Britain.”

I shook my head, and Peter stood beside me as we looked down at S.H.I.E.L.D’s burning base.

“Let us make haste – they probably need help,” Thor said firmly, and we nodded.

“Take the girl over to Stark’s Tower in Scotland – we’ll meet up there. Tell Tony what’s happening,” I instructed the pilot.

Diana let out a choking noise as she realised what we were going to do.

“You’re not going to jump out are you?” She asked in disbelief, and I threw a grin over my shoulder.

“Honey, we’re the Avengers.”

I leapt out and began to free fall toward the base. Thor, adept at flying, zoomed past and landed easily on the runway before disappearing inside, Mjolnir raised. Flames erupted from my hands, and I gained control of my flight. I landed lightly, and watched Peter tumble through the air. But he was prepared, and as he fell past the ship he shot webs from his wrists and swung back up onto the runway, landing beside me after a doing a flip in the air. I gave him a quick smile of admiration.

Jets and helicopters burned on the runway, and a few bodies lay on the ground. I watched the helicopter fly away, and a little bit of weight was lifted off my shoulders. Stark would look after Diana. We exchanged glances, and then darted inside the building.

“Let’s split up – you go that way, and I’ll go this way,” I said, gesturing. I turned to go, but suddenly Peter grabbed my arm, and I looked back at him questioningly. I couldn’t tell what he was feeling because of the mask.

“What?”

“I just wanted to say, stay safe. This could be the last time we get to speak,” He murmured, and I understood his meaning.

Who was to say that Loki wouldn't kill one of us? If he’d managed to take out a whole base full of trained agents, then he could kill one of us in a second.

“You too,” I smiled slightly, and he pulled me into a brief hug. It was nice.

We split up, and I stalked the corridor, calling on all of my skills to remain silent. A distant roaring could be heard, but I dismissed it as the fire consuming the Helicarrier. Suddenly, someone sprang out of the door at the end of the corridor, and a wild look was in her eyes. I recognised her as Agent Maria Hill, Nick’s lieutenant. She ran forward unseeingly, her hair smouldering slightly at the tips and her mouth open in a silent scream. I grabbed hold of her as she tried to push past, and gripped her shoulders tightly.

“What’s going on?” I demanded, and her eyes focused on me.

“Loki. He’s here. And he’s got some Frost Giants with him,” She managed, and I was about to carry on my investigation when she stopped me.

“But that’s not all. He’s possessing people again, just like last time. And he’s got control of … of…” She stopped and her eyes widened in fear.

“Who?” I said sharply.

“Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye and-” She rattled the names off quickly, using their official titles, and then stopped as a bone-shaking roar echoed in the corridor.

Him!” She screeched, and barged past me.

I only had a second’s warning before the door and most of the wall was blown off at the end of the hallway, and a huge green monster burst through, roaring again.

“What in the name of Odin is that!” I yelled, and it’s surprisingly human-like eyes fixed on me. It began to careen forward, hands outstretched and huge teeth exposed in a fearsome snarl.
