Jacques

She was gone. The love of my life, Olivia Caliban. I thought back to my last conversation with her.

Promise me we'll see each other again

How could I promise her that, when I had no idea what the future had in store? Sure, I'd be the happiest man alive if I got to see her again but I have to be real: the chances were very slim. With Olaf and Esme after both of us, it was very possible that one or both of us may end up dead. I sat down on the steps and felt something jab into my side. Reaching into my pocket, I pulled out a pair of stylish black glasses. Olivia's. With a sigh I thought back to the glorious kiss. It was the most beautiful moment of my life, her lips on my lips, my hands around her waist, just forgetting everything that is wrong in this world and enjoying what we could. How tempted I was to drive after her. But I couldn't. Not with Olaf and Esme about to find me. I put the glasses back in my pocket and stood up. Not a second too late, because right at that moment, Olaf burst out of the doors, Esme right behind him. I actually had pity for Esme, her greed always getting the better of her and in the way of all other things in her life. She looked quite sheepish. Olaf must have figured out what she'd done.
"Jacques Snicket."
I turned to face Olaf. "I believe you are speaking to me?" I replied, keeping my wits about me.
"This ends here," Olaf yelled, his sharp voice penetrating the silence. Esme tapped him on the shoulder.
"Darling, leave him alone. Him and his weak librarian girlfriend are going to give us the location of the sugar bowl!"
Olaf scowled. "How many times do I need to tell you, we will get the damn sugar bowl. We don't need their help!"
Esme frowned. I took this as my opportunity, and spoke up. "If you, as you say, know the location of the sugar bowl, why haven't you retrieved it yet?"
"Yes darling," Esme said, looking at him with distaste, "if you know where it is, why have we not gone to get it?"
Olaf closed his eyes and rubbed his forehead. "Because, Esme, I am busy. I have other, better things to do than chase after your every need!"
Esme gasped, and stared at him in shock. I guess she had never been spoken to like that before. Olaf looked around.
"Wait a second, where is the librarian?"
Oh no. I start to feel a bit of panic seeping into my body.
"She...uh...she's gone to get the map. Yes, the map, with the information about the sugar bowl," I say, stuttering a bit. I've never been a good liar but hopefully this once, I won't be caught. Esme's face lit up with joy. "Fantastic! When will she be back?" She grabbed Olaf's arm. "Isn't this just fantastic?"
Olaf turned to look at her with disdain.
"No, Esme, it is not fantastic. You know what, I dont care about the sugar bowl. That's what you want. Not me. And I'm sick and tired of going after it!"
Esme stopped. After a moment, she regained her composure.
"Well then. I see how it is. You don't care about me, and I don't want to spend any of my precious time with someone who treats me like garbage."
She turned to face him with an icy glare. "I'm breaking up with you. Have a nice life, you'll never find someone as hot as me."
Then she started walking in my direction.
"Jacques, take me to the location of the sugar bowl."
