Olivia

I missed him already. Why does life have to be so cruel? The one happiness I had within my mediocre life lasted for a few weeks, being abruptly ended by some trick of fate. Why couldn't he have come with me? Of course, I knew the answer; sticking together would drastically increase the chances of us being located and killed. But it just wasn't fair. Needing distraction from my unhappy thoughts, I looked up at the stars. I could instantly spot the Taurus constellation, and the Capricorn one too. Jacques and my zodiacs. I slapped my head. I needed to stop thinking about him.

This story isn't over yet.

Those magical words, enough to keep me going and give me strength, knowing that we would see each other again, may it not be for a long time, maybe not even in this life, but it will still happen. I smiled distantly, reassured. The breeze through the windows lifted the corner of the brochure. Searching for more information, I read over it again, all while concentrating on the road. I'm guessing Madame Lulu is on our side of the schism, but times had changed and I needed to stay alert and wary. In the distance, I could spot a few colourful lights. Must be Caligari Carnival. Only now did I realise that I was seriously overtired. I could rest when I got there, I conceded. I decided to recite my favourite quote, which had been with me for as long as I could remember, to keep myself awake.

In a world too often governed by corruption and arrogance, it can be difficult to stay true to one's philisophical and literary principles.

That instantly calmed me, as it always does. Looking up, I could see the taxi was rapidly approaching Caligari Carnival. The tiniest bit of fear had found its way inside my brain, but I pushed it aside. I needed to stay strong. I needed to do this to make things better for everyone. I couldn't afford to stuff this up, there's too much responsibility riding on my shoulders. The taxi pulled up almost silently to the front entrance. Warily, I stepped out of the car and surveyed my surroundings. Caligari Carnival was certainly run down, that's for sure. I felt a twinge of pity for the place, and Madame Lulu. Speaking of which, where was she? Deciding to be brave, I called out, "Hello? Anyone here?" I soon realised that she probably wasn't here, considering it was the middle of the night. But then out of the dark, a figure was walking towards me.
"Hello?" I called out again, walking towards them. Finally, under the deep red glow of a broken light, we met. The figure removed her veil and smiled at me.
"Welcome, Olivia Caliban. I have been expecting you."
