Uniformed Officers
Police Constable (PC) - the archetypal beat 'bobby' of popular legend. Until some years ago, female officers were known as WPCs (woman police constable)
Sergeant - one rank superior
Chief Constable - the most superior rank of an entire constabulary.**A constabulary means the police force of a whole county, comination of sparsely populated counties or else a large urban area, such as the Met (London), Greater Manchester or the West Midlands (Birmingham and its surrounds).
Non Uniformed Officers
Also known as plain clothed officers, collectively referred to as the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
