Uniformed Officers

Police Constable (PC) - the archetypal beat 'bobby' of popular legend. Until some years ago, female officers were known as WPCs (woman police constable)
Sergeant - one rank superior
Chief Constable - the most superior rank of an entire constabulary.*

*A constabulary means the police force of a whole county, comination of sparsely populated counties or else a large urban area, such as the Met (London), Greater Manchester or the West Midlands (Birmingham and its surrounds).

Non Uniformed Officers

Also known as plain clothed officers, collectively referred to as the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Ranks in ascending order:-

Detective Constable (DC) - Larkinson
Detective Sergeant (DS) - Wye
Detective Inspector (DI) - Kubič
Detective Chief Inspector (DCI) - Yardley
Detective Chief Superintendent (DCS) - Baines

Other

The equivalent of an American CSI officer is known as a Scene of Crime officer (SOCO). The specialist armed response team SO19 is meanwhile comparable to SWAT
