"There's no sunny side to this." Laura didn't care to sugar-coat it to us. Angels have been known for their sanctity and kindness, and their wings have been symbolism for love and honor. We were nothing like them.

Our wings only materialized when our thirst overpowered sanity. They were a weapon, something we could crystalize at our own will to bring down a massacre. Richard's words alluded to a future I dreaded.

I did not ask for this life. No one warned me before the storm hit. Needless to say, I had to ask Dad some serious questions. Part of me felt like he had nothing to do with this. But the inquiry was inevitable.

It was worse knowing that I had dragged Ken with me.

A tame hand wrapped into mine. I shifted my attention to Ken, worry cradling its way back to me. "Luke, I need to talk."

Morgan had retreated into the cabin, announcing that they wanted to catch some Zs before the break of dawn. But Laura was still with us, sitting across us.

"Alone," Ken asked with hope. A small crease between his brows made me unsure of what was coming.

"Before that," Laura spoke. "There's something you should know. Both of you."

Ken was about to free his hand from me. A shadow of disappointment apparent in the motion, but I gripped his hand tightly. He didn't have to be scared of anything. After what happened on the ship, I felt more than capable of protecting him.

"We're all ears." I wanted this to be over quickly.

"Morgan was right about Ken. He has the sight. It makes him see us."

"Well, he won't tell on us if that's the concern."

"That goes without saying. Ken smells no different, so he is definitely a human."

I wanted to counter that, but it made no sense that she couldn't smell the distinct vanilla on him.

"So, he's a human with our sight. Is that it? I don't think this should be a problem," I said.

"No, it's not. Do you remember I called him your Parabine?"

"What? What's that?" Ken asked, bewildered. He glanced back and forth between us.

"You never told me what it meant," I clarified to Laura.

"Because I was kidding. I used the word loosely, almost mockingly, but I think." She sighed and looked down.

This didn't sound nice either. Nothing did.

"Do you know why we call ourselves the Fallen?" She asked out of nowhere.

"Cuz, the first angel fell from the sky?" Ken answered when I didn't. Tired from all the suppressed memories flooding back, I didn't feel like I could handle any more bad news.
