I PROP MY HEAD UP with my hand, shaking the sand out of my hair. "Why do you do that?"

"Do what?" Marisol replies.

"Using insults like it means something good."

"I dunno. I mean, I was just quoting a Britney Spears song." She shrugs, rubbing her sunglasses off with her towel. "But it takes the power out of them, I guess. When I say that someone's a bitch or a slut in an empowering sort of way, it creates a positive connection. So when a guy calls us something like that it seems less derogatory."

"And why do you care so much about what men think of you?"

"I don't. Seriously. The minute I start living my life according to what a man thinks is the minute I convert to Christianity. In Jesus's name will I bake my face. Amen."

"You say you use those words in an empowering way to take the power away from men. But why let them have any power in the first place? If you don't care what they have to say about you, those words become instantly meaningless."

She rolls her eyes. "I bet the men back on Apollonisi aren't any better."

"I wouldn't know. I don't care for them. So I avoid them. Women are so much easier to be around."
