You ever find yourself on a ledge so high up you can see yourself practically touching every inch of the world? Then unconsciously your body takes you back? It wasn't your choice but that's where you have that feeling to jump.
I mean, why would you step back if you weren't going to jump?
That's what you were feeling now as you looked down past the cliff's ledge and into the crystal, blue waters below. It was your gap year between High School and University and finally you were claiming that holiday reserved for you and yourself. Greece was a beautiful place and ever since you watch Mumma Mia at the tender age of six you fell in love with the white and blue architecture, the heat, you even dreamed to find your prince upon his white steed.
You weren't supposed to have those fantasises at 19 but you relished in them despite it all.
Now clad in an orange swimsuit with five young, random strangers from your hotel, you allowed your heart beat to become erratic, your adrenaline kick in and sweaty palms retract your fingers in and out of a fist. Cliff diving wasn't new to you but in such a place like this you drank in the experience with a few steps back and a wailing scream that would haunt your memories for the rest of your life.
You weren't met with dazzling water that perfectly reflected the sun, nor did you feel the sharp pierce from the scraggly rocks under the edge, instead the liquid was thick against your skin, sticking to every inch of your flesh before you gasped above the surface.
Clouded and grey skies covered the summer sun and hid you under a shadow of gloom, brown sludge and watery mud engulfed your body and stained your swimwear all the way through and your wider surroundings... this wasn't Greece anymore but a disgusting, desolate swamp.
Or so you thought it was desolate, because once you raised to your weak, shivering knees, you heard a deafening screech that chilled you to the bone. On instinct, you slapped your hands to your ears and curled low to the water, it wasn't that effective in hiding you with the sparse signs of nature and ruler-height depth but the creature's shadow that moved at a terrifying speed was followed by that of a man's silhouette.
It ignited hope that you could find home, that this man would slay the monster of long limbs and a horrific shriek and gallantly lead you back to civilisation.
You never knew that there were swamps in Greece let alone out of nowhere. As you trudged toward the monster and man like a mad woman your chest constricted further with panic, every step made the desperation for rationality paint a bigger picture until it finally... popped.
"Hey!" You screamed at the top of your lungs, your arms soothing you as you pulled them right across your torso.
You watched the man's head whip your way before the monster once again whipped a long arm around, but this time, threw him across the swamp. It was a heart-stopping moment that brought your whole world to a close and numbed every sense. Because once that man was thrown and that monster heard your call, all of danger's focus was planted on you.
"Oh shit" you cursed to be replied with another howl of terror from the creature. It didn't even take a millisecond for you to be running like the wind, debilitated by the water yet still fast (even after not doing cross country since last year).
It was five minutes of intense running that felt like an hour, every curve of your body left and right was met from a gnash of the creature's jaws toward any extended limb. Your calves were on fire, (H/C) whipping every which way as you frantically assessed your surroundings for the man's corpse. He must've had a gun or something to protect himself against such an abomination.
