playing dress up

i spent my time,
playing to your ideas
of what i should be,
waltzing and dancing
to the tune of your drum,
instead of my own.

three knocks and a ring,
saddled up on a string,
i felt weightless
and on top of the world,
but only if you felt so too.

i spent too much time,
playing dress up with you,
letting you tie and cinch me,
to your grasp,
but there comes a time,
when the wire snaps.

and though it feels like my world,
is falling out from under me,
like an acrobat
who lost balance,
i know i'll be better off,
soaked and cold
at the bottom of my ditch,
with my friends to help dry me off,
then stuck soaring in cloud nine,
waiting for the day you'll decide,
to cut the string.
