what kind of flower only blooms at night?

i leave my window open at night
to hear the soft sighs of a city gone quiet
to watch with sonder at the little people;
an edward hopper painting, your favorite.

did you know? that sometimes,
when i can't sleep,
i like to talk to la lune.
i like to tell her my secrets-
my life, my love,
my hopes, my dreams
because
when you're not here,
she listens.
i think she pities me,
so she listens.

and when you're here,
when you're finally here,
you leave so soon.
you leave with shuffling feet
and quick kisses on the cheek
you leave me so quickly
that i can never say
what it is that i want
to talk to you about.

and i wonder
is this done with intent?
                       or are you like me-
forgetful?

starlight filters into my room
and it encapsulates me in blue.
i tell la lune that
when you're not here, i cannot bloom.
when you're not here, i simply wilt
and wait for you.
i guess i've surrendered myself
to the poor fact, the unfortunate truth
that, when you're not here,
it's all i can do.

i leave my window open at night
so i can hear you whistling
the dulcet tune you said
you made only for me;
or so i can see you
standing with a grin by your car
waiting to take me on the adventure
we planned out centuries ago.

i pester la lune with ideas of you
and where we're going
but
you're always gone
and i fear
i think
i fear
that i think, maybe,
maybe,
maybe
you've forgotten about me?
but i told you i told you:

i'm your moonflower;
luminescent in the night, i bloom lily-white
and i'll wait patiently to show my true light
only to you, because i'm only for you.
i promise i'll glow only for you,
because i love only you.
i only love you.
