THREE VEINS [H.S.]

"If you just minded your own, none of this would've happened!" I yell aloud on the street, pushing past him to continue walking on my own.

His footsteps trail behind me fast and quick, followed by a rough hand on my shoulder.

"This is my fault now?!" Harry asks sharply, forcing me to face him. "I didn't know asking you for an innocent cup of coffee would kickstart our Veins to start fading!"

His choice of words makes my chest tighten. "Our?"

I watch as his fingers angrily lift up the sleeve covering his left wrist, the faint orange tint of his first Vein now violently seared into my memory. He holds out his arm as proof I wasn't the only one affected by the day we met.

My eyes dart up at him right away, his gaze already burning into mine.

"What does this mean?" I question meekly, glancing down at my own branded wrist.

His voice is firm, tinged with bitterness and a revelation I wouldn't have come to on my own.

"It means we will be the death of each other, Evelyn. Literally."

Veins are lifelines, and everyone has three. Three safeguards branded on their wrists. One less Vein, one less opportunity to resurrect from death.

Evelyn has her three. Harry has his. Both live stable, predictable lives. That is, until they cross paths unexpectedly, causing their first Veins to mysteriously begin fading.

To stay alive, Harry and Evelyn collide on a path they never prepared for or desired -- a path full of secrecy, passion, and an always-present danger inches from their fingertips.
