Chapter Five

Chapter Five:
"I Promise."

The first time Tommy snuck into Eden's room through her window was after a particularly bad fight his parents had. It was a freezing January night, snow fell from the sky and the cold temperatures were nearly maddening for Tommy.

He showed up at her house for the first time, battered and bruised because he had crashed his bike. He couldn't see through the blur of tears that filled his eyes, threatening to spill out. He wouldnt tell Eden that's the reason he crashed. He didn't want to worry her, Tommy never wanted to worry her. But worry she did. She was worried the moment she heard him calling her name.

When Eden saw him crouched outside her bedroom window, blood trickling down his forehead, pain clearly written across his face, she knew she had to help him.

When she pulled him into her room, he noticed how worried she looked right off the bat. She pulled him into her bathroom and sat him down on the edge of the tub.

Eden didn't expect him to explain to her anything if he didn't want to. She opened the cabinet and pulled out a bottle of alcohol and a wash cloth.

Tommy had never been touched as tenderly Eden touched him. She touched him as if she was afraid he would break if she moved too fast. Tommy liked it, more than he cared to aint. He liked how gentle she was with him.

"Are you okay, Tommy?" Eden's voice was soft and velvety as she dabbed at the cuts on his forehead. Tommy nodded, blinking away the tears as he focused on the writing on her shirt.

"I'm okay." Tommy nodded his head again, almost to reassure himself that he was infact okay. "I'm sorry, I don't know why I came here.."

Eden shrugged, rubbing his forehead with her thumb as she pushed his head back to make sure she'd gotten all the blood from his face. "It's freezing out there."

Tommy closed his eyes, nodding his head. "Cold as fuck."

"My brother has a winter coat you can use, but when he comes back you're gonna have to return it. My parents would freak the hell out if you didn't because it was.. so expensive." Eden let go of his head and put away the bottle. She tossed the wash cloth in the laundry basket with a yawn. "Davey's probably still awake, you should go to his place. He lives the closest."

Tommy furrowing his brows as he tilted his head and gave her a strange look. "How do you know that?"

Eden's face fell as she cleared her throat, "No reason, it doesn't matter."

Tommy scanned her face before shrugging and standing up. "Okay."

"Okay.. Okay, okay, yeah I'll go get it. But you better be safe out there or no deal." Eden pointed at him, a teasing smirk blessing her features.

Tomny laughed quietly, enjoying and relishing in the moment of somone showing that they cared for him. "I will."

"Promise?"

Tommy nodded, looking down at his dirty hands. "I promise."

"Thanks, 'Den." Tommy smiled, taking the popsicle from her hand. Eden nodded, taking a seat on her roof, her feet dangling off of the edge.

"Aren't you worried about your parents seeing me?" He asked, sliding his trash into his pocket.

"Dad's still out campaigning, probably using Elias and me as a stupid trick, and mom's on the other side of the house." Eden explained, licking her blue popsicle as she focused on the setting sun on the horizon.

Tommy grinned, licking his teeth and leaning close to her. "So, we can be as loud as we want, then, hm?"

Eden's jaw fell open as her face changed into a deep crimson tone. "I-I-I-"

"I-I-I what?" Tommy smirked, over exaggerating biting his lip. "You want to?"

Eden frantically shook her head no, "Not that you arnt hot or anything, but no, thank you."

Tommy laughed, gently nudging her. "I'm fucking with you, dude."

"Thought you were trying to fuck me." Eden smiled, winking and nudging him.

Tommy scoffed, shaking his head and putting the popsicle stick in his pocket. "Princess has a potty mouth, doesn't she?"

Eden's smile fell as she looked away from him and towards the orange sky. "Don't call me that."

Tommy furrowed his eyebrows, "That's not gonna stop me."

Eden sighed and rolled her eyes, taking a bite of her popsicle. She winced immediately after, suddenly realizing how cold it was. "Cold, cold, cold, cold, cold, cold!"

Tommy chuckled, taking her popsicle from her hands and taking a bite out of it. Eden's facial expression changed to shock, "But-but it's so cold!"

He shrugged, "Like my heart."

"Oh, please.. You have the biggest heart ever, Tommy." Eden smiled, avoiding eye contact with him.

"Not as big as my dick."

Eden reddened as she covers her face with her hands. "You're unbelievable."

"You love it."

Eden smiled into her hands, letting silence fall over them as the spring breeze blew her hair gently behind her.

Tommy couldn't help but notice how lovely she looked when she was cast in the golden light of dusk. He drew his lip in between his teeth as he studied the oblivious girl. Tommy's lips parted as he trailed his eyes over every inch of her face, drinking in her seemingly never ending beauty.

"He's not alive anymore, is he?" Eden's voice brought Tommy out of his trance.

"Who isn't?" Tommy's voice was quiet, almost afraid he'd break the girl if he spoke too loudly.

"Elias.." Eden broke her gaze from the trees, turning her head to him. Tommy frowned at the sight of tears welling up in her eyes. She tried to force them away, desperately wanting to stay strong in front of Tommy. "He's not.. He's not.. alive.. We're not gonna find him safe and sound.. are we?"

Tommy stayed silent, trying to decide how to comfort Eden. "I'm sorry."

Eden cast her eyes down at the ground below, an indiscernible emotion flashing through her eyes for a plot second. "I miss him."

Tommy silently leaned over, wrapping the girl in his arms and resting his chin on her head. Eden leaned into his touch, blinking away the tears as she raised her hand to rest on his elbow.

Tommy tightened his hold on her, suddenly realizing how much he wanted to protect her from all the bad things in the world.
