Lights from the city lit up the night sky with an orange touch to it. Patrick sped along the empty highway while the radio lightly played inside the car. Sam had her arm wrapped around Esther's, her partner since day 1. Sam could still remember the first time they had met in kindergarten. Esther was sitting alone under the playground but Sam had come to their rescue. She picked a dandelion from the grass and handed it to Esther. The two of them have been inseparable since, "Hey, I've never heard this song before. Do you guys recognize it?" Sam asked everyone. Patrick said no and Charlie just sad quietly shaking his head.
"Are you guys kidding?" Esther exclaimed, "You guys have the best music taste but don't know this song?" They paused, "Hero's? By David Bowie? No body knows this song?!" They threw their arms up in the air in defeat.
Sam removed her arm from around Esther, "Well, I do know that this is the perfect song to drive through the tunnel to." She nudged her brother.
Patrick groaned, "It's freezing! No, momma Patrick says no." He smiled.
Esther leaned across Sam, "Pleaseeeee? It's the perfect song!" Patrick glanced over and smirked at them. Sam opened the hatch to the back window and excitedly climbed out. The wind grabbed her skirt and danced around with the fabric as they met the lights of the tunnel.
"W-what is she doing?" Charlie nervously asked.
"Ah don't worry, she does it all the time." Patrick said. He turned back to Esther, "You gonna join her?"
Esther reached for the radio knob and turned the volume up so that it was the only thing you could hear. So that it would deafen every thought you had, every worry, and just focus on the music and the road and the people they loved, "You bet I am!"
Sam helped Esther out of the window and put her arms out to let the wind take over her. Esther stood behind her, hugging her waist and staring off through the endless tube of yellow light. Sam turned her head back to face them, and Esther passionately kiss her lips. Charlie didn't realize it, but he was staring. He already felt like he had known the three of them for forever, but he felt different towards Sam. He knew she was happy with Esther, but couldn't help but feel the slightest bit of jealousy.
Patrick had noticed Charlie watching them, "Lesbians aren't a kink." He joked.
"What...oh! No no I just-" Charlie was caught off guard.
Patrick patted him on the shoulder, "Don't worry about it."
The song continued and Esther and Sam were still standing out on the back of the car, "I LOVE YOUUUUU!!!" Esther screamed into the tunnel. The words echoed around them and hung in the air.
Sam turned around and wrapped her arms around Esther's neck, "I love you more." She said and met her lips with Esther's once again.
Patrick drove the truck up the hills and around bends, holding on to the night as long as possible. Sam and Esther still sat on the back of the truck, facing everything behind them. The world moved further and further away from them. Sam started to shiver and Esther gave her the jacket they were wearing, "So what do you think of this new kid." Esther asked.
Sam looked down then met her eyes with her lover, "I think he's lonely," she whispered, "he needs a friend." Sam leaned in to kiss them one last time before dozing off on Esther's shoulder. They played with her hair and hoped they would never forget this night.
