"Oh," Quasimodo said in surprise. "Good m-morning, Master."

"Dear boy, whoever are you talking to?"

"My. . . friends."

"I see," Judge Frollo said as he tapped a motionless Victor. "And what are your friends made out of, Quasimodo?"

"Stone."

Frollo grabbed Quasimodo's chin as he chided, "Can stone talk?"

"No, it can't."

"That's right. You're a smart lad," he tells him as he sets a basket on a small table. "Now, lunch."

Quasimodo fetches the dining ware; an old wooden set for him and a nice metal set for Frollo.

"Shall we review your alphabet today?" Frollo asks as he takes out a book.

"Oh, yes, Master. I would like that very much."

"Very well. 'A'?"

"Abomination."

"'B'?"

"Blasphemy."

"'C'?"

"C-contrition," he stutters out, slowly gaining confidence.

"'D'?"

"Damnation."

"'E'?"

"Eternal damnation," Quasi smiled.

"Good. 'F'?"

"Festival," Quasi said all too quickly.

"Excuse me?" Frollo sputters as he choked on his wine.

"F- for- forgiveness."

"You said, 'festival.'"

"No!" Quasimodo declared.

"You were thinking about going to the festival," Frollo concluded.

Quasi dragged his hands down his face, "I- it's just that you go every year-"

"-I am a public official. I must go." Frollo descended the stairs as Quasimodo followed. "But I don't enjoy a moment! Thieves and cutpurses, the dregs of humankind, all mixed together in a shallow, drunken stupor."

"I didn't mean to upset you, Master."

They reach the bridge connecting the towers and Frollo looks off into the city.

"Quasimodo, can't you understand? When your heartless mother abandoned you as a child, anyone else would have drowned you. And this is the thanks for taking you in and raising you as my son?"

"I'm sorry, sir."

"Oh, my dear Quasimodo. You don't know what it's like out there. I do. I do."
