in the slytherin common room, jack sat reading a book he found in the astronomy tower, oddly. he didn't usually like to read but something about this book made him want to read it.

it wasn't a story book, it was a book on herbology. except there was writing all over it, scratching out certain points and writing something different.

someone had written all throughout the book. jack found it intriguing. he wasn't the most fond of herbology, thought it to be appalling at most times. but this book, he was drawn to reading it.

so he sat on the black leather couch, biting in to a granny smith apple he had stolen from a first year gryffindor while on his way to the common room.

he read through each little detail. reading first what the book said, then reading what the person had written instead.

"jack, you seen crabbe and goyle anywhere?" draco asked, approaching the couch.

jack didn't take his eyes away from the book when he answered. he shook his head, saying, "probably pigging out in the great hall."

he took a bite of his apple, turning the page. reading through all the writing before something came to his mind.

"oh! did you do it? the paper?" he asked draco, taking his focus away from the book and turning to his friend.

draco nodded, feeling happy with himself. "and you're sure she found it? what if she didn't?"

"no she found it. i saw her in the infirmary. she had a mirror and i could see it crumbled in her hand."

"and you're positive we were right? it's a basilisk?" draco asked jack this time.

"well yeah. think about it, salazar slytherin was a parselmouth, and our symbol is a serpent."

"if he left behind a monster in the chamber that only his heir can control, his heir would be a parselmouth too. it has to be a serpent. a basilisk, definitely."

"basilisks are the most deadly creature in our world, they're able to live for hundreds of years. salazar slytherin would have put something in the chamber that can live for however long until the heir comes to hogwarts. something that the heir can control, a basilisk."

draco had sent jack a letter over the summer, telling him all about the plot he heard his father speaking of.

both boys stand by slytherin, wanting the muggleborn gone, but they knew that these attacks would mean the closing of hogwarts.

jack and draco love the school, they wanted to keep going here, they didn't want it to close. so jack started thinking, figuring out that there had to be a serpent of some sort.

so when draco was at flourish and blotts before school started to get his books, he found a page about a basilisk.

he ripped it out and took it with him, jack figuring out more after seeing it.

he knew the trio would be on the case as well so he and draco decided to make sure hermione found the page.

jack even wrote something at the bottom of the page, in hopes of helping solve it further.

pipes.
