Chapter 54

Deep into my sleep I heard the ringing of my phone

I managed to open my eyes and I sat up

I blinked a few times before I picked up the phone

When I saw the caller I frowned

Aunty?

Why was she calling me at 9 in the morning?

I actually texted her during fajr replying to a message she sent me and we started a conversation from there

I unplugged the phone from the charger and I answered it before it cut off

"Hello Hameeda" I heard Aunty's shaky voice as I placed the phone to my ear

It sounds like she had been crying

"Na'am Aunty, is everything ok?" I asked starting to get worried

"Hameeda meet us at Nisa hospital now" she said

That was when my heart dropped

She hung up before I asked anymore questions

I didn't know when I scrambled to my feet and I walked to the door

I walked out of the room and I went straight to Umar's door

I tried opening the door but it was locked with a key

When did he start locking the door

I knocked on the door

The door opened and Umar came into view

Still not wearing a shirt and looking sleepy

When he saw me his eyes opened "what happened?" He said as he took my hand and dragged me Inside

Tears were starting to form at the brim of my eyes "Aunty called me, she said I should meet them at nisa"

He blinked "what happened?"

"I don't know" I said as the tears flowed down

I raised my hands to wipe them but Umar's hands reached before mine and he wiped the tears away

"Don't worry, I'll take you there now, go get changed" he said

I nodded before I walked out and I went back to my room to see Aliya still asleep

I changed into a black abaya and a veil

And picked up my phone then I went out to see Umar in a white Kaftan

"Angel, take care of Aliya we'll be back soon" he told Angel who was cleaning the center table

She nodded curiously looking at us

We walked out of the house and into Umar's car

He started the engine and we drove off

The traffic wasn't crazy so we reached in little time

Umar parked the car

I dialed Aunty's number

"Aunty mun iso" I said

"Toh, meet us in the emergency section, you'll see Rumaisa waiting for you there"

"Toh" I said as I hung up trying not to let me mind linger on the word 'emergency'

"What did she say?" Umar said as we exited the car

"She said we'll see rumaisa in the emergency section, she'll lead us there" I said my voice coming out as a whisper

Umar looked at me before he held my hand

We walked to the emergency section and just as Aunty said rumaisa was there

She looked really worried and tired

She greeted i and Umar

"Rumaisa what's going on?" I asked her

She swallowed and she turned around ignoring me and walking ahead

I frowned ready to talk to her again when Umar squeezed my hand "we'll find out soon"

I sighed as she led us

We reached this narrow hallway and I've honestly never been to this side of the hospital

I noticed Baba and Aunty there

I gulped as I continued walking

I couldn't see Ya Abdul

That was when I started panicking

When we reached them I and Umar greeted Aunty and Baba

"Aunty? Why are we here? and where is Ya Abdul?" I asked

Aunty looked down

I could hear my heart beating loudly in my chest

"He was speeding...and his car got hit by a truck" she said

It me some seconds to process what she had said

And when I did

I stumbled backwards

Umar was behind me, he quickly caught me before I fell

I didn't know I started crying until I felt Umar's arms around me

I turned around and I held his kaftan and I cried my heart out

How?

Ya Abdul was never the person to speed while driving

When I'm the one driving and I pass a certain speed he always tells me to slow down

Then how could be the one speed driving

I already lost my mother

I can't lose Ya Abdul too

The thought of losing him made me cry harder

"Shh, he'll be ok" Umar said as he held my head closer to his chest

Honestly, if this was in normal circumstances, I'll be embarrassed hugging Umar in front of Aunty and Baba but right now I didn't care

Umar released me a bit and he led me to the chairs

He sat me down and he sat next to me

"Rumaisa bring her water" Aunty said to Rumaisa

Rumaisa brought a bottle of water and she handed it to Umar

He opened it before he brought it to my lips

I took two sips before i pushed it away
