My limbs flailed to propel my body out of the engulfing tar and upwards as I clawed at its unending layers. My eyes clenched, warring the urge to peek for rays which might have pierced the onyx-ocean—for I knew I'll find none.

Like always, the whispers of familiar fears endeavored for me to drown—but this time, no more fashioning façade or perfecting pretences; no more giving up! This time I'll rise above self-pity; to bask in the hallowing healing of self-love.

I bunched my body and propelled upwards as if an arrow released from a taut bow. My head emerged, tearing the final layer of the shrouding grime and heaving for air. I opened my eyes as the bright light pricked akin needles and turned my head, searching for land, which I found to my left. I swung my limp limbs and swam towards it. After a few minutes my pruned fingers grasped the edge of the cracked but fertile land and feebly climbed out of the onyx-ocean; and onto the ground.

I did it! The euphoria of shedding the past, reflamed my hope; as I stood facing the dark-sea. I turned around and my gaze glided across the silhouette of tall trees; the mist waltzing with the breeze and the grey expanse littered with newborn buds; a contrast to the darkness laying behind—which was once within me. All my distressing insecurities and traumas had nested inside my mind and had immersed me in those onyx depths. In it for years I'd laid defeated but time and again I had resumed the propelling effort, until at last I found the shore; I gazed in front of me, at the budding expanse—my healing soul, still scarred and grey yet blooming with hope—was worth it!

A gurgling sound reverberated in the wind from behind, as my neck turned backwards at the...floating darkness? The tarry-sea engulfing me awhile ago—loomed thirty-feet above ground; casting its cloudy shadow over the surroundings. It churned, bubbled and seemingly shrunk into itself—appearing a freckle against the azure sky; before completely vanishing into oblivion. The hollowed ground once cradling the onyx, now nurtured a glimmering meadow; as the sun bestowed its hallowing incandescence on my blossoming soul.
