I took the moment of silence as time to slowly recounter everything Freddie had told me as he stood near the bolted table and I sat on the edge of his bunk across from him, I was confused and curious about every single word Freddie had said. The conversation was endless as he told me about Tony Rotimi, the previous leader of the VL Gang, and the fact that Tony had won the last race and was released from the prison with someone named Kiden Conner in toe. I was understanding until Freddie had spoke about the event that would be starting Friday, a series of races with the opponents being murdered.
I didn't believe him but I was very sure that Freddie hadn't bumped his head recently, I knew he was in well health and wasn't a sociopath in this manner. I knew that Freddie was bipolar, not bat shit crazy and he didn't have any mental issues. The races were deadly and the only way a person was eliminated was through death, there was no other way out of the race once they started. Winning five races allowed you to have your life back in the outside world, the original driver and the passenger that ride in the car with you. The weapons were of the variety, from saw blades slicing at wheels to roof-welded cannons blasting of cars when they were in a close proximity, Freddie said that Tony's old car had been equipped with an inside usage minigun that could be heard all over the courtyard.
"Barbie..." Freddie said, looking at me with a face that begged to not be judged wrongfully. "I don't know how else to explain it."
I pursed my lips. "Have you ever seen that Jason Statham movie with the pris-" I started.
"It's exactly like that." Freddie hastily said, eagerly nodding. "But... in real life, real lives are being taken. Real people are being killed because they want to leave but can't."
"What can we do about that?" I asked, glancing over at him questionably.
"Nothing, but be one of those people." Freddie said, moving over to the bunk and taking a seat beside me before wrapping his arm around me in his weird cuddling position again. "I know it sounds crazy but we're criminals and the government don't give a damn how Warden Harper treats us."
"Does the government know?" I asked quietly, not wanting anyone to pick up on our conversation.
"Of course they know, they just don't give a damn about us. When we race, they watch it for entertainment, help keep them from killing one another and ending up in the same place as us." Freddie said, licking his dry lips in thought, they're so kissable. "Tony had raced four races, damn near close to getting out and it was for nothing because he had gotten chosen for parole. We don't know how, we figured that Harper had asked for him to get it so that she could be with him-"
"He was sleeping with the Warden?" I whispered in utter shock, he's a smooth motherfucker, that Tony guy.
"Shit, he was sleeping with whoever slept with him." Freddie chuckled, shaking his head. "Warden Harper is a little slick bitch, she had gotten pregnant purposely to hold times to Tony so that even if he got out and tried to move on with his life, he was still tied to her. They messed around for years, and we always told him to stop before she set him up... and she did, well... she tried."
I remained silent as I quietly listened to Freddie's story time, I was completely fascinated with everything he was telling me and the more he talked, the more everything started to make more and more sense to me. I wasn't shocked that the government knew about the manslaughter going around North Acres County in the form of entertainment, and of course they got a sick thrill from the lives being taken. I was amazed not only with the story but about the Tony guy that was attempting to start over in life, I wonder if he ever got that chance.
"Tony had his last race only a couple months ago," I tuned back in, "he won but it was a damn slim chance because the last minute Renegades had blew the hood of the car up, exposing Tony and Baby but they made it. They're safe. I had got a letter from him the other day saying Harper had given him custody of his daughter, meaning plan two is now going to be set in motion with the race. Harper got hell to pay, and she knows it." Freddie whispered, leaning forward and pecking my lips suddenly.
