——
Death held its hand out for Evangeline to take, greeting her with a welcoming smile and warm embrace as if she were an old friend; wrapping her in a cloak of darkness as it led her further into the abyss.
Evangeline looked back once, watching a crowd form around her limp form, lights flashing from photos; police pushing people back as an uproar began.
The spirit guiding her gave her a smile before shielding her gaze from the chaos that ensued from her untimely end, leading her deeper into the peaceful shadows.
Evangeline felt liberated.
With each step into the blackness that was the afterlife, she felt her pain fade and her mind numb. As Death led her through the void, she realized that her cheeks were wet with tears as she found her salvation.
But soon into her journey, her angel turned toward her, whispering a prayer under his breath.
Evangeline curled her fingers around his hand, gripping him tightly as a hole opened up above, light streamed through, illuminating the darkness. The hole allowed her to see the vast cavern, that held hanging greenery and a raised platform beneath the opening. The entire floor was covered in clear water and full of colorful fish; broken ceramic and jewelry littered the floor. She realized that they were walking on the water as if there were a layer of glass above it.
Evangeline stood in stunned silence as her angel continued to pray under his breath, tugging her along. She watched as the glowing fish followed her bare feet until they reached the raised stone.
Whispers of sweet songs danced throughout the air, enchanting and melodic but eerie; like a sirens song, luring her deeper into the darkness.
"What is that?" Evangeline asked, as if she were a curious child, staring out into the cave.
Her angel pulled off his hood, revealing pasty skin, silver symbols inked into his it, similar to the ones carved on the platform. His eyes were a pale blue that sparkled with delight as he pushed his blonde curls out of his face.
"Those are the angels, they sing for the souls that don't have angels to guide them," he responded with a soft smile, watching an awestruck Evangeline.
After another moment, Evangeline was brought back by her angel pulling her back as the stone shifted, allowing for a stairway to emerge, connecting the platform to the opening above. Evangeline paused for a moment, wondering if this was it.
Was this where all of it ended?
Death held her hand, encouraging her to take her first step onto the stacked rocks.
"It will be alright," he assured her as an easy smile made its way onto his face.
Evangeline clenched his hand tighter, her voice soft, "will I ever see you again?"
Death tossed his head back, his deep laugh echoing throughout the cave. "You will, I promise you that Evangeline."
With a reassured grin, Evangeline began climbing the stairs, holding onto her angels hand as she did. Before he could let go, she paused, glancing back at him. She quickly descended the steps. Death watched her curiously as she motioned for him to lean down.
Evangeline pressed her lips to his cheek softly, whispering a small thanks in his ear with a pleased grin before taking off up the stairs.
