In this lesson, we'll gonna learn how to say "this" "that" and "it."

In English, you can say "This is my book." and "This book is mine." The word "this" was used as a pronoun and a word the modifies "book."

However, in Korean, words for "this/that" as a modifier and "this/that" as "this/that thing here" are strictly distinguished.

Take note of these and put it in your heart and soul:

➤ 이 [i] = "this"
- you use this when you are referring to something near yourself.

➤ 그 [geu] = "the/that"
- you use this when you are referring to something farther away from you but closer to the person you're talking to.

➤ 저 [jeo] = "that/over there"
- you use this when you are referring to something far away from both of you.
- and yes, this 저 [jeo] here has the same pronunciation as the word "I" in formal Korean.

Since 이 [i], 그 [geu], and 저 [jeo] can work as modifiers, when you want to use them as pronouns, you must add the word 거 [geo] or 것 [geot] after these words.

거 [geo] / 것 [geot] = thing, stuff, item, fact

so...

➣ 이 [i] + 것 [geot] = 이것 [igeot] or 이거 [igeo]
"this thing /this one/ this item"

➣ 그 [geu] + 것 [geot] = 그것 [geugeot] or 그거 [geugeo]
                                    "the thing /that one/ the item/it"

➣ 저 [jeo] + 것 [geot] = 저것 [jeogeot] or 저거 [jeogeo]
                                     "that thing over there"

examples:

사람 [saram] = "a person"
• 이 사람 [i saram] = "this person", "this man/lady here", "he/she"
• 그 사람 [geu saram] = "the person", "he/she"
• 저 사람 [jeo saram] = "that person over there", "he/she"

고양이 [goyangi] = "cat"
• 이 고양이 [i goyangi] = "this cat"
• 그 고양이 [geu goyangi] = "the cat" / "that cat"
• 저 고양이 [jeo goyangi] = "that cat over there"

우유 [uyu] = "milk"
• 이거 우유 [igeo uyu] = "this milk"
• 그거 우유 [geugeo uyu] = "the milk" / "that milk"
• 저거 우유 [jeogeo uyu] = "that milk over there"

펜 [pen] = pen
• 이거 펜 [igeo pen] = "this pen"
• 그거 펜 [geugeo pen] = "the pen" / "that pen"
• 저거 펜 [jeogeo pen] = "that pen over there"

■ If you want it make it into a sentence just add -이에요/-예요 [-ieyo/-yeyo] at the end.
