Mike's POV

A/N If you see any mistakes, please correct me. I didn't edit this chapter.

"That's totally not true!" I argued as I walked up my porch steps. I was on the phone with my best friend Lucas and we're having a VERY important discussion.

"You have to wet the toothbrush before and after toothpaste." I unlocked the door with my keys and he argued some more through my phone and I listened although I didn't care. He thinks it's better to wet the brush afterwards because water before and after causes the toothpaste drip off.
"Well, that's better than getting some gum disease because you brushed your teeth with a dirty toothbrush that had fallen all over the floor. You never know what happens when you're gone. And, you share a bathroom with your little sister, so what can tell you that when you're not keeping an eye on it she's dropped it all over the floor and instead of rinsing it she just put it back?"

There was silence on the other line and I smiled in victory. I usually won arguments like this. I have a lot of knowledge on taking these types of precautions because I have not one, but two sisters.

I stepped into the house and Lucas was saying something but I wasn't paying any attention as I pulled my jacket off and hung it up on the rack beside the door. I slid my shoes off and placed them against the wall. Mom hated it when I tracked mud all through the whole house so it is now a rule that if I get my shoes muddy, they are to stay by the door until she can properly clean them. I don't understand how the only time she pays attention to me is when it effects her too.

I walked to the living room and saw everyone already sitting in there. "Family meeting without me?" I fake pouted and took a seat, hanging up on Lucas without warning him. He probably won't notice. His record is 30 minutes of talking after I hung up because he just talks so much he didn't even realize I wasn't replying. The funny thing is he could have stopped talking and I would never have found out, but this kid had recorded a whole voicemail.

"What's going on?" I asked. My mom looked over at me and placed a hand over dad's. "So-we-uh did something very special." mom responded nervously. She looked between the three of us. Holly ran over and I pulled her onto my lap. "What's she talking about?" Holly whispered to me. No one seemed to hear but she was no good at whispering. "I don't know, listen." I said and she nodded.

"What did you do?" Nancy asked, obviously nervous too. Usually we would have been calmer but that is because we always followed mom's lead. Right now she wasn't looking very confident. "So, you know how you guys love kids, I wanted to do something for you."

I faked a really big smile, now worried. "We're flattered, but. What.Did.You.Do?" my fake smile disappeared and she still looked anxious. "Uhh, so-uhh, about that-" she stumbled over her words as she tried to form a coherent response. "We're taking in a kid from the system." Dad said bluntly. My and Nancy's eyes widened. "What does that mean?" Holly asked.

"Oh Holly, baby, come here." mom said opening her arms wide and Holly ran to her. If I wasn't so stunned I would have laughed at her adorableness. "It means we're getting another kid that doesn't have anyone else to go to." mom explained to her. Holly looked up at her and with a frown and asked, "You mean, he doesn't have a mommy and daddy?"

Mom smiled a sad smile and shook her head. "No, they don't. It's what the foster system is for. When a home isn't safe, they get sent there. If their parents die and they have no close relatives or if no one wants them to live with them then they get sent there. It's a sad, sad, place full of a lot of broken kids. Please, forgive me for not asking you guys but he'll be here tonight."
