In my opinion, I find it incredibly suspicious about how Allister's league card says "He claims to have developed the ability to see deceased Ghost-type Pokémon after an accident he had when he was four years old, but the truth is still a mystery." But what exactly could that accident have been if it allowed him to see ghost type pokemon? If he had already had the gift of seeing the spirits of the dead, that league card wouldn't have said that but why would an accident cause him to have this gift? And isn't rather odd that Allister can choose to have his eyes visible through his mask's eye holes or not? Like, sometimes, they won't be visible, but other times, when he's feeling a strong emotion, they're dimly glowing purple and are now visible? And the goroawase number 291 on Allister's uniform translates to "Hateful" but why would Allister be Hateful? Think about it. If an accident caused Allister to be able to see the deceased, the only logical reasoning behind this would be if Allister had actually died from the accident and was merely possessing his own body, perhaps why he always wore his mask because perhaps he can't always keep every feature of him perfect because of the fact possessing the body can only do so much, or Allister had a close enough to death experience that a ghost Pokémon had to possess Allister in order for Allister to stay alive. Think about it. Would a twelve year old kid really be able to be a master at ghost types if there wasn't something causing this? And as for the goroawase 291 meaning "Hateful", perhaps he had a remaining hatred left over from the accident that happened when he was only four. Maybe a spirit that was keeping Allister alive caused Allister to hold a grudge against the accident. Maybe not. And another thing is that this could explain why Allister has so many fears and insecurities. He fears people finding out about the truth about him, so he hides the truth behind his mask and often stays silent due to not wanting to risk saying what happened. But logically speaking, the only logical thing that could have caused Allister the ability to see ghosts due to an accident was if either it was a fatal accident. Or perhaps the accident had left Allister as half ghost half living. This would explain things. Why? Think of it this way, Allister is a sad kid who gained a strong liking for ghost types after going through possibly a near death experience. He's the youngest Gym leader in Galar; he doesn't seem to have parents. Interestingly enough, close inspection of Allister's eyes reveal they have a strange glow where other characters have normal pupils. If he wasn't fully dead, this would likely explain that he's at the very least half ghost half living. The reason he's fearful all the time is because he's perpetually sad and scared because the same accident killed his parents. You think this is too dark? Pokémon's had darker stuff. Keep in mind, This is the same series that gave us Lavender Town and a Pokemon that wears the skull of its dead mother. And on top of that, basically one out of every four Ghost-type Pokemon sustains itself on children's souls or something equally disturbing. Now keeping all this mind, doesn't this seem to make it seem quite suspicious about Allister in general? The kid is always seeming incredibly sad all the time about something. When has anyone ever seen Allister smile a single time? The answer is that no one's ever seen him smile. And the only time he's been seen without his mask was because his rare league card had a picture of him in his locker room without his mask when no one knows who even took that picture of him. That mask is likely the only thing keeping Allister from just wanting to hide from society for all of eternity because he doesn't want anyone finding out the truth. Plus, now that he shares a Gym with Bea, he's only more secretive about making sure no one finds out the truth. As stated, "The truth is still a mystery" about what really went on with that accident. And keep in mind, it also stated by the official Pokémon blog, saying "Allister is a talented Trainer of Ghost-type Pokémon who has taken on the mantle of the Ghost-type Gym Leader at a young age. He's extremely shy and fearful, and he always hides his face with a mask when around other people. Allister rarely makes public appearances and apparently spends most of his time around ruins or in cemeteries." Now doesn't that seem rather odd? Now why would a child want to spend their time in a cemetery or old ruins when that would only further remind them of he accident? And he only wears his mask when around other people. Meaning he'll take it off anytime he's completely alone but doesn't dare take it off around others. Now doesn't that seem like he's hiding something? A child such as Allister wouldn't be normally this fearful and secretive unless there was something major that happened that traumatized them into wanting to keep their identity completely hidden in fear of a truth being found out.
