Hey guys! So in this chapter, there is a part that is a little gory, so if you don't like that, you can skip it. It's nothing too important t the storyline. I hope you like this chapter anyhow though!
Two weeks can seem like two hours. Maybe it was the reason sirens loved to giggle so much. Because life wasn't long enough to waste a moment. These were the kind of things Thalia was always saying, and for once I agreed with her. The last two weeks had gone by in a flash.
I'd taken on more duties seeing as I was 16 now, and I knew that next year, instead of a birthday party, I'd be having a coronation. I'd finally be old enough to rule without a regent. The three remaining humans had been moved to the now secure stables.
Bothersome as it was, I tasked myself to keep an eye on them. After all, the first chance GranMer got, she attempted drowning them. However, the power of the miraculous protected them, not letting them drown as the others had... not that we let the humans know the others were dead. They were so much easier to handle now that we'd made our agreement.
Even though I didn't let my GrandMer attempt to torture or kill them, I allowed her to parade them around the city. She thought it would be a good way to show our people that we were stronger than mankind... But the only thing it's seemed to do is make my people uneasy.
Though two of the humans seem to like it. The girl waves as though she's the Queen of the World, and the other male just seems to enjoy the fresh air... but the captain isn't so dumb. He knows exactly what's happening. And I can tell he hates it... yet he's never voiced a complaint.
I haven't spoken to Cor in weeks... he seems to have disappeared. Thalia and I have looked all over my body, but we haven't found my soulmark, yet Thalia feels my red string so strongly. None of it makes any sense.
And finally, I'd continued with Leo's teaching, the only one of my siblings who shared my love of learning. Thalia had stopped her studies long ago, finding lessons frustrating and useless, so I didn't push her. Alex would stop by every so often but mostly kept to the training field. Leo however, couldn't get enough. In a way, we learned together. We'd find a subject to interest us, then learn and memorize all we could about it.
We were in one of these said lessons when I brought up the topic, "What should we do with the humans?"
Leo looked up from his book on Astronomy, "What do you mean?"
I shrugged, "I don't really know... It's just keeping them locked up all the time... we don't even treat our animals so poorly."
Leo went back to his reading, "We don't keep them locked up all the time. GrandMer is very good about taking them out on walks..." Leo winced, realizing what he'd said, "You're right... We treat them no better than humans treat dogs."
"It makes me sick," I agreed, "Comparing us to them."
"So... what do we do?"
"That's what I just asked," I sighed.
Leo was silent for a moment. Then, "Let them compete."
"What?"
"Let them compete in the Olympic games. It's in a month, right?"
I shook my head, "No way! The Games are sacred... we can't just let humans compete. Besides, what would we do if one of them actually won anything?"
Leo shrugged, "Give them their rewards, though we might change a few... maybe grant their freedom? That is, freedom on the island... or at least, limited freedom. The human captain is smart, and the other man only acts on his captain's words... but the girl is an absolute idiot. Anyhow, my point being, they wouldn't try anything stupid. Besides, you and I both know our people are uneasy about the humans. If we let them compete like any other person, the people may begin to feel more at ease."
