Chapter 14

Mathew's POV

I knock on my sister's front door and wait for her to open, I look around the dimly lit hallway and cringe. Why is she living here? It's literally a run down apartment building for those who cannot afford to pay a lot of rent or for charities to house homeless people in for free temporary accommodation. I look over at the door opposite hers, that's where Erik Lander is, my eyebrows furrow, what the hell is that billionaire doing in this dump? What is he trying to achieve? Maybe he's filming a TV program where a rich person lives a poor lifestyle for a week, although it's been over a week.

The door is pulled open and Jessica smiles at me, 'Hello Mathew, come in' 

I step inside and look around the apartment, Erik's not here, he must be in his own apartment. 'When do you plan to move out of this dump?' I roll my eyes, making myself comfortable on her sofa. She rolls her eyes at me and picks up the mug on her coffee table to take a sip. 

'Mathew, you know I'm only renting this place out whilst I'm studying, I don't plan to live here forever, it's just cheap and allows me to pay my university fees which aren't cheap!' she reminds me.

I nod slowly, 'Where's your little guy friend, Erik?' 

A faint blush covers her cheek, 'He's in his apartment, I haven't seen him all morning so I assume he's sleeping in, must be tired' 

I roll my eyes, 'Yes sure, he must be exhausted from being poor all day' 

Jessica frowns at me, 'Don't be so rude Mathew, he's a very nice man' she blushes again.

'Why do you keep blushing?' I ask, watching her take another sip of her drink. 

'Well, a while ago... Erik asked me to... be his girlfriend' she speaks slowly, her blush deepening as she chews on her bottom lip.

'What? Don't tell me you said yes' I lean forward, resting my elbows on my knees as her frown deepens.

'Of course I said yes, why wouldn't I say yes' she puts her now empty mug down onto the coffee table.

'Oh Jessica... my poor, sweet, innocent, stupid Jessica' I shake my head at her. What the hell is Erik's game here? 

My sister rolls her eyes, standing up to take her mug to the kitchen, 'Why did you even come here? You said over the phone that you had something important to tell me and that you were taking me somewhere' 

I follow her into the kitchen with a smirk, 'Ah yes, let's go, I cannot tell you here, it's something I have to show you' 

She grabs her phone and purse before we step out of her apartment, she locks her front door before looking over to where Erik's door is, 'Maybe I should tell him that I'm leaving, he might come knocking for me' 

I roll my eyes and grab her by the wrist, dragging her down the hallway and towards the elevator, 'Stop wasting time, he's not going to die without you'. She pouts. 

As we exit the elevator at the ground floor and walk outside the building I pull out my car keys, smirking as I press a button and my brand new car... courtesy of Erik's mother, unlocks. My smirk widens upon seeing my sister's confused face as I drag her towards the car and open the door for her, she stands there and looks at me for a few seconds before she glances nervously around the street as passers by, she shuffles closer to me before leaning into my ear, 'Mathew... did you steal this car? You can tell me, I won't tell anyone, but please tell me if I'm getting into a stolen car' 

I roll my eyes before pushing her into the passenger seat, 'Don't worry sis, it's definitely not stolen nor borrowed, I own it, it's mine' I close the car door and jog over to the driver's side and climb in, starting the engine. 

'Yours? You cannot afford a car like this, you work a part time job and even if you could afford to buy this car, there's no way you would be able to keep up with the insurance payments for it every month, the insurance for this car alone is probably three times what my rent is' she rants, I ignore her as I rev the engine, driving towards the new house Erik's mother bought me.

'Mathew, where the hell are we? What is going on? First the expensive car and now this... a mansion?' Jessica stands at the entrance of my new house, her jaw hanging open in shock. 

'This was my surprise sis, I actually got a new job that allowed me to take advantage of all the great things in life, like an expensive car and my own home' I smile, pushing open the front door and letting her step inside. 

'Are you a drug dealer?' she whirls around to look at me. 

'No Jessica, it's a perfectly legal and highly respectable job' I roll my eyes. 

'What is the job then?' she asks. 

I smirk, 'Now that, I cannot tell you, I haven't actually got the job yet... but I would advise you to watch the daily news, once I get the job it's going to be all over the media and you'll find out' 

'I have a bad feeling about this Mathew, this better not be something illegal' she sighs.
