I recently redrew my previous The Third Son cover art. I really love the original because the composition and overall feeling really matches how I'd imagine Malory (the character pictured) but I still thought I could do better!
I don't think I ever explained why I named this picture The Magician. The Magician and the Emperor cards in my tarot deck always remind me of Malory so the picture is kinda inspired by the artwork on those cards.

1) I just started painting over the original artwork. It's not cheating if you're tracing your own art, ok.

2) I started on the hair and the gown first because those were the easiest to draw. I also decided a circle window would look cooler. I also started blocking in his face but I need everyone to know I was 100% unhappy with his face until the VERY end, so don't judge his wonky ass expression.
