EPILOGUE

AGNES LEFAY

It had been three months since we'd left the facility. The guard who had helped spring us -who's name I found out to be Ben- drove us back to our apartment building in Mysterio before leaving and heading back to his family to give them the good news about the facility. As it turned out, Ben's brother had enlisted after the attacks and was never seen again. So Ben enlisted to find out what had happened to him. Unfortunately Ben found him in the penn. He'd been trying to free him when the DOD came but his brother was added to the casualty list. That's when he came to warn us and for that, I would be eternally in his debt.

It had felt like an eternity since I had crossed the threshold of my small apartment. Everything was still in its place from the rush I had left in when I went running after Blake. Clothes strewn over the bed and the lights still on. I was shocked to see that we still had electricity, as it happened the building had its own backup generator and Jay made a mental note to pick up some more fuel to keep it going as long as we could.

It was decided that Addison would stay with me, us both being girls and all. We moved down to Mrs Pembrooks apartment on the ground floor. Blake wasn't totally happy with us being so close to the street but when I explained that it was the only two bedroom in the building and that if anything happened it would be easier for us to climb out of the back window and run. This seemed to appease somewhat and I supposed it helped some that the guy's took it in turns to stay with me every night, sometimes I was even blessed with Jay and Connor together.

It was weird at first being in Mrs P's place but the guy's had surprised us by gutting the apartment and redecorating it so it was modern and fresh and everything felt new. They even fitted new safety bars on the windows that we could open from the inside for an easy escape. They were so sweet!

Addison adored her room. They had painted it bubblegum pink and filled it with purple butterflies. She had settled in so well and the guys absolutely adored her. She still had nightmares every night but to be fair we all did so she would always end up in my bed with one of the guys or one of us would be in with her and when she was awake she was always attached to the hip with Blake, not that I could blame her. We were all dealing with a lot and still months down the road we were still struggling after all we had been forced to do those couple of months after the attacks.

Several weeks after we had arrived home, an emergency broadcast was sent out informing all remaining survivors that a cure had been found and that stocks were being sent to community centres across the country. There had been no mention about my father or any details about the demise of the ARC Alabama branch. But we knew and we would never forget what went down there and would never trust anyone outside of our little family again. We even forewent the ration packages that the army would drop off weekly in favor of scavenging our own. We were living our lives with one foot out of the door as a precaution but as time went by it became easier to relax and enjoy the new life we had been blessed with.

Not long after the announcement, we were woken early one morning by the main door buzzer blaring. When I answered I was shocked to find a healthy looking Lily standing at the door. She looked amazing since I had seen her in the facility and so much more like me in the natural light of day. She'd explained that she had found out about what Val had done to both of us and had found my address amongst the paperwork I had left behind when I'd leased the apartment.

She came back everyday after that until finally we moved her into my old apartment on the top floor. Addison was ecstatic as was Lily, finally having a second chance at raising the daughter that had been stolen away from her the first time round. I was so happy that Addison wouldn't have to live the life that I had after losing her parents. She was surrounded by people that loved her and in the end that's all that matters. And besides, I was enjoying getting to know my mom too, it turns out I know which side of the family I get my fiery temper from. I found that out not long after she'd moved in and Val showed up to the door. Let's just say, she's never been back since.
