Chapter Two

Get out.

Burning.

Get out.

Screaming.

Get out.

It hurts.

Get out.

Kiera jerked awake with a gasp. The air was filled with acrid smoke, and she began to cough almost instantly. Her legs and stomach were pinned under the twisted, red-hot metal that she assumed was her father's car. Her mind was clouded, and all she could focus on was the burning pain in her right thigh and the smoke she was breathing. She tried to scream, but all that came out was a weak croak. That pitiful effort drained her, and her body tried to regain energy by sucking in air. Only it was sucking in smoke.

She could hear screaming from all around her, though no voices stuck out. Her leg throbbed, and she hissed through her teeth. Taking only the shallowest of breaths, Kiera tried to ease herself out from under the metal, but something shifted ominously and she stopped. She felt so tired. Her eyelids felt like they had weights attached to them, so she let them droop closed. The screaming grew louder, and she scrunched her eyes tighter shut.

The pressure on her abdomen eased, but her eyes did not open. She was lifted and placed on a soft surface, but she did not move. An oxygen mask was placed over her nose and mouth, but her breath barely fogged it. An IV was inserted into her arm, but she did not sit up. Half of her blood was still back on the road where they had crashed.

She was gone before her mother saw her.

Kiera opened her eyes and found herself standing in grey fog. It was all around her, below and above, too. As if some enormous, invisible creature were blowing it away, a path before her cleared. A figure clothed in the same color as the fog floated towards her, but she didn't step back. She was not afraid, but strangely at peace.

The figure offered her an arm, and she was about to take it when another arm stretched out from above. This arm was clothed in what looked like pure light. The grey figure floated back, as if giving her permission to take the arm above. Kiera tentatively placed her hand in the light-clothed one, and was gently lifted up, up, up, until she couldn't see anything but fog below her.
