i sat in the room as his mother gave him a talk about what to do if he was ever pulled over by a police officer.

keep his hands up.

listen to everything they told him.

and tell them each and everything he did.

and i sat there listening to his caucasian mother have to tell her own son

WHO WAS NO DIFFERENT THAN ME

THAN HIS SISTER WHO WAS DISABLED
WHO DIED A FEW YEARS LATER

HIS OTHER SISTER

AND HIS YOUNGER BROTHER

that he was not safe because of his skin color.

i recognize my privilege.
and i stand with you.

i respect you.

i love you.

you are wanted.

i'm so sorry that this is what it has come to.
