Miss Pauling went silent for some time after you had said that you didn't want to be left at a foster home. "Y/N, could you wait outside, please?" You nodded slowly, a tad unsure, but then got up to grab your backpack and walked through the set of doors. This new room had some chairs lined up along the walls. You hadn't noticed it before, but it was actually a waiting room. You ambled over to one of the seats that were closer to the doors and sat. You tried your best to listen in on what they were talking about, but it was all muffled. It sounded like they were whispering to make sure you couldn't hear, so you quickly gave up on trying to eavesdrop. You sighed and sunk back into your seat. What the hell am I going to do now? I could just run now and save them the trouble. I mean, yeah I could get caught and tried for what I did to that guy, but chances are I'll be fine. I mean, I've been pretty damn invisible up to this point, so who's to say I can't go back to being just that? Well, actually now that I think about it just up and leaving would be rude. I haven't even thanked Miss Pauling or Dr. Ludwig for patching me up... Even with how crazy it is that there isn't even a hole in my pants. Sighing as you tuned the world out, you hugged your knees to your chest and began to mutter to yourself aloud without realizing it. "Well, who's to say that it matters whether it would be rude or not. It's not like it matters if some random kid leaves without a 'thanks.' They're just trying to get rid of me anyway, so maybe just continuing my life as an invisible hobo child wouldn't be the worst plan. But what if I did get caught? It's not like I can hide forever. If anything-"
"Do 'ou do this often?"
You jumped up with a start, pushing yourself back into your seat as a man appeared out of thin air. He wore a fancy red suit and a ski mask, and seemed to be French from the sound of his accent. He raised a brow as you stayed silent, staring at him like a deer in headlights. "Wh- what? Do what often?"
"Talk aloud to the point people think 'ou're insane." The French man looked at you blankly before going to sit next to you. You shifted away from the man to make yourself feel more comfortable, which surprisingly seemed to go unnoticed by him. Taking a drag from a cigarette that seemingly came out of nowhere, he continued. "Well?" You stammered, not knowing whether to attempt to answer his question or to try and change the subject to something along the lines of- where did he even come from and who he was. You decided to do both, in that order. "I- uh I guess it just makes me feel better? I dunno- but who are you? And how the fuck did you just suddenly appear like that?" The man chuckled and raised a playful brow. "Language, petit ado. But to answer your question you may call me zhe Spy." He offered his hand to you to shake it, to which you awkwardly complied. Did he just call me a child? Or small? Petit sounds like something you'd call a child... Deciding to ignore the nickname, you asked your question again. "But uh, you didn't answer my other question. You know- how you appeared out of thin air?" Spy took another drag out of his cigarette and crossed his legs, speaking in a slightly more serious tone. "I'm afraid that iz not something I can tell 'ou. But if 'ou would listen closely, I believe 'ou may just hear something that could be important." He glanced over to the set of doors. Confused, you were about to ask what he meant when you heard it. It came from within the doctors lab, and you could actually hear them talking. They were no longer whispering, but talking normally so that you could hear them. Getting up, you crept over and got into a crouch, gently pressing your ear to the door while making sure not to put too much pressure on it so the door wouldn't open. Without you noticing, Spy did the same thing, but by pressing his ear to the door above where you were.
"-I just don't know what I'm going to do with them. I can't take them to a foster home, and I can't take them back to where they were, and taking them to Teufort is out of the question, Scout. They'll get lead poisoning from the water."
"It was just a suggestion! I didn't mean it in that way. I mean, we could just give them a lifetime supply of water bottles."
"Zhat vould be vasteful. And I don't see vhy jou don't just drop zhem off at a foster home vithout zhem knowing. It's not like jou're going to see zhem again."
"I can't do that, Medic! As weird as it is to admit, it feels like I just really, really can't do that."
"Alright, vhat are jou going to do vith zhe kind zhen?"
"Yea, it's not like you can keep them or something."
"... Actually... How would you guys feel if they were to stay here?"
"... Jou can't be serious."
"Well it's the only thing I can think of, and it's not like I can take them with me!"
"Miss Pauling, if jou're so concerned about zheir safety jou should know zhat zhey vould be safer anyvhere but here!"
"Wait- are you guys taking my idea seriously? Because that was a joke." Scout said, laughing nervously at the end of his sentence, but quieted almost instantly.
"Medic, it would be safer than taking them with me on my missions, where them could get shot again or killed."
"And here zhey still haff a chance of being shot and killed! Zhey vouldn't be able to defend themself if a situation vere to arise. Have jou seen zhe vay zhey are constantly flinching? Zhe kind iz scared of zheir own shadow!"
"Okay then, fine. What if we were to ask them? We tell them everything and if they refuse then you can give them amnestics and drop them off at a foster home."
"... I suppose zhat vould be alright."
"Are you guys not even gonna ask me what I think about all this? It was my idea!"
There was a moment of silence, and then a quiet, "Nevermind." out of Scout.
"Fine zhen. Let's go ask zhem."
There was a sigh of relief. "Thank you, Medic."
"Ack, vhatever."
You and Spy scrambled back into your seats as footsteps neared the set of doors. The doors opened right as you made yourself look comfortable. Miss Pauling was the first to walk out, and her brows raised when she caught sight of Spy sitting next to you. "Oh, Spy. What are you doing here?" Medic and Scout followed after her, and when they saw Spy, Scout narrowed his eyes and Medic raised a brow in suspicion. Spy smirked at their reactions and replied. "Just talking to my new friend here, er-" He gestured to you, realizing he never asked for your name. "Y/N." He turned back to the three who were awaiting a proper answer. "-Y/N. Now then, may I ask what 'ou three are doing here?" Medic and Scout looked to Miss Pauling, who seemed to feel their gazes, to which she sighed. She went down on one knee in front of your and looked into your eyes with a very serious look on her face. "Y/N-" she took a deep breath in as if she had to prepare herself for what she had to say next. "-these men are mercenaries. I work with them, and since you can't go to a foster home or back where you used to be, I thought that maybe you could stay here." Your eyes widened in surprise. Wait- so she was serious about all of that shooting stuff?! Is that why she was there in the first place? They're all just mercenaries? What kind of mercenaries are they?! Oh God oh fuck what am I gonna do?? Should I say yes? I mean, it's better than a foster home, and it'd keep me away from anything that could reveal what I did. Or getting caught for what I did. Ok, you know what, fuck it. If shit goes down I can just run and hide again- hopefully. You nervously took a look around you at the individuals surrounding you. Spy looked shocked, as if he hadn't heard the conversation they had through the door from before. Scout seemed to be uncomfortable with the situation, and slightly perplexed at the fact that it was even happening in the first place. Medic was just straight-up grumpy and was glaring at you as they all awaited your answer. Miss Pauling continued to stare you in the eyes, pleading for you to accept. Why she wanted you to stay so bad, you didn't know. But something in you made you feel like just you couldn't say no.
"Ok, I guess I can stay. It's just- is everyone ok with me being here?"
If you had blinked you would have missed it, but for just a moment Miss Pauling had the brightest and most relieved smile on her face. Quickly, it changed into one of business as she nodded and got to her feet. "I'm sure they'll all be fine with it, right guys?" Saying the last part through her teeth, she glared at the men surrounding her, making sure they all got the idea. Medic simply sighed out of annoyance and Scout quickly nodded. Spy's eyes were still wide, and he seemed to be in shock that you would actually be staying. But, he quickly regained his composure and got up. "I suppose we should go tell everyone the news then?"
You blinked, having to process what he had just said.
There's more of them?!
