IT'S SO EXHAUSTING.❞ Hadley had murmured, rubbing her right temple while she shared a deep sigh with her father. She could already picture him with a hand on his hip and the phone pressed against his ear too tightly.

❝I know sweetheart, but you can't let them know.❞ He had responded as she just closed her weary eyes and dreamt about being home. Hadley could almost taste the fragrant vanilla scent that always roamed in the kitchen thanks to her step mother's love for baking.

It was such a sweet memory, but as Shane remained quiet on the line, she was snapped back to the present. The reality was that Stephanie and Hunter were relentless. Like sharks and piranhas, the second they sensed even the slightest bit of weakness, they were on the attack.

To have to tiptoe around her own family was exhausting, and in moments like the one she was having, Hadley questioned if it was worth putting up with.

❝I should probably call grandpa. Maybe if I keep calling he'll answer.❞

Shane chuckled, knowing his father would definitely be the kind to toss a phone out if it rang too much. ❝Just listen to your heart. It's the one thing they don't have.❞

Hadley brought herself to smile, only because her stupid mind thought she'd sound less depressing if doing so. ❝ Love you dad.❞ Was all she could whisper before ending the call and banging her head against the desk twice.

She shouldn't have been surprised when a headache then kicked in, but it put her in such a foul mood that when her eyes skimmed to a portrait of her grandfather and Stephanie, she flung it to the wall in a blind rage.

There was a moment of silence in which Hadley stood frozen, concerned with her actions before she grabbed the other frame with Hunter and Vince to slam onto the ground as well.

❝Thought I could find you here.❞ A voice then interrupted as the door slowly swung open, revealing Buddy Murphy.

He cautiously stepped in, closing the door behind him quietly. Hands in his pockets, his head bobbed twice as if saying, okay to the what seemed like the scene of some fresh vandalizing.

❝Why the fuck are you looking for me?❞ Hadley hissed as Buddy's shoulders relaxed when he stepped over some glass from the broken frames. Something about the crisp sound of glass being stepped on was soothing that she had to bite down on the inside of her cheeks to stop a smile from forming.
