I recently read Slash's autobiography and it was such a cool book. I wanted to do a book review because I think this is a great book for anyone who is a fan of Guns 'N' Roses.

Book Review:

The tone which he speaks with throughout the book is conversational. He's literally telling stories as if he's talking to you directly. He doesn't sugarcoat things which I think makes the book more honest. He talks about the neighborhood he grew up in which is Laurel Canyon. This is the hub for many musicians. His mother designed costumes for musicians and his father created album covers for singers like David Bowie and Joni Mitchell. Slash's book is definitely a rock and roll memoir, so you can expect stories of sex, drugs, and of course rock and roll. Some of the stories are described with vivid details. What I really liked was Slash talking a lot about his childhood with detail. I think when an author writes an "objective autobiography" he or she skips detail about that part of a person's life. He talked about his friendship with Steven Adler and how they eventually came up with the idea to start a band. Here's a bit of a fun trivia fact for you: Slash went to an audition for the band Poison, but at the last minute he decided not to go for it because he thought the guy who was sitting next to him would win the audition and ironically that's what ended up happening. C.C. Deville was auditioning with Slash and he officially became a member of Poison. Slash dated his first girlfriend at the age of 12. I was shocked when I read this in the book. He talked about some of the odd jobs he did before he joined GNR. He worked at a record store and also at a newspaper stand. What was interesting in this book is that he worked hard to get where he's at but he didn't use his connections (his mom was known in the entertainment business). He got success by just trying to find the right band he wanted to be in. It was interesting to find out that the song November Rain was already an idea in 1986. The original length of the song was 18 minutes, but by 1991 it was cut to 9 minutes. He talks about why he bought the top hat. He bought it because it's something he likes to hide behind when he feels shy on stage.

This book gets into how he made the decision to pick up the axe and start wailing away on the six-string, how he came to form a bond with Duff and Steven as well as how he met up with Axl and Izzy. The band progressed themselves almost too fast as they were added on to open up for the equally as hedonistic band Motley Crue. The book goes into great detail about their individual tastes and such but this book is from Slash's perspective and talks about him and his endeavors but also, obviously has to go into detail about Guns & Roses. The book is very insightful about the inner workings of G&R and how and why the tension slowly built after years on the road and info about the lineup changes as well as Axl constantly being late to gigs or just deciding to bail before the set was scheduled to end.

Toward the end of the book, it was interesting to see Slash's vulnerable side when his second wife was pregnant with their first child. He was nervous about being a father because of his parents' divorce. He wasn't sure how good of a father he will be to his kids, but he turned out to be a very nice father to his children. Another topic that Slash covered in his book is that because of his long use of drugs he wears a defibrillator which controls his heartbeat because the drugs took a toll on his organs and body. It took him a while, but he did become sober and he hasn't used drugs for a long time. After he left GNR, he formed a band with Matt Sorum, and Duff McKagan which is called Velvet Revolver. They even asked Izzy to join the band, but he refused because he preferred to work solo and not deal with another band.

Overall, I would recommend this book. You will not be disappointed. Slash's book provides many interesting stories about his life before GNR, during GNR, and after GNR.
