Surviving school

Today would be my first day of senior year in a new school, in a new town full of strangers.

Anxiety consumed my body as I walked to school this morning which heightened all my senses. I could feel the bottom of my tennis style skirt moving against the tights covering my legs and I gripped to the long sleeves of my oversized sweatshirt like a safety blanket.

As I entered the school gates I spotted the three boys I had met at the shop the other day. Any familiarity was a relief in this moment and my anxiety subsided slightly.

I continued to walk towards the entrance when they spotted me.

"hey!" the one I remembered to be Tom called out.

"Hi." I replied shyly.

"Bethany, right?" Jackson replied.

"Yep that's me." I chucked slightly and thankful they remembered me.

"So since you're new do you need any help getting to your classes?" Louis questioned.

I quickly retrieved my schedule I had put into my backpack last night after receiving it in the mail.

"Well it says I have history now with Mr Peters so directions to his class room would be great."

The three boys looked at each other and smiled.

"We actually all have that class next!" Tom responded cheerfully.

"We kinda cheated the system so all of our group could be in at least one of the same classes together this year." Louis explained.

We all headed off in the direction I presumed was history. In reality I was just aimlessly following them.

I chatted with the boys a bit until we reached the classroom.

"After you Beth." Tom said as he opened the door for me

I smiled at him as I thanked him and walked into the already nearly full classroom.

My anxiety flooded my body again, my head started to spin and my palms began to sweat.

The boys walked down the rows of seats, despite my uneasy state, I chose to follow them.

I felt countless pairs of eyes staring at me.

I am the new girl so I expected this but it doesn't make me feel any less uncomfortable.

I watched as the boys greeted more of their friends, they seemed to have their own little corner of the class room reserved for them.

I took a seat beside their group just as the teacher walked in.

He began his class introducing the program of study this year and how we would be assessed.

Ten minuted into his lesson the door opened and a dark haired boy wearing an oversized black hoodie and dark jeans entered the room.

As he walked towards the corner of the room i was sat in I heard Tom, Louis and Jackson whistle.

"Its out time you got here slacker." one of them called out with laughter in his tone.

He laughed with his friends and looked down to the closest desk to him.

Unfortunately that desk was mine.

He picked up the piece of paper i was going to use for my class notes, crushed it into a ball and threw it at Tom.

he took a seat in between me and Jackson as the teacher announced,
