The six of you sat at the wooden dinner table, you sat between Eliza and Angelica, and across from Alexander. "You know Y/N, your father acted as if you were the most fragile vase to ever exist," Alexander told with a faint chuckle. He examined your face once again, as if it brought him solace, which it might've. "You're just a carbon copy of him," Eliza chimed in. You grinned at their kind comments. "Thank you," you chirped. "So, what happened to y-" Angelica started but was instantly cut off by Eliza. "SHH!" She frantically commanded.
You knew what she was going to ask. That question was bound to come out of a curious child whom doesn't have a firm understanding on the world's mouth. She had been only 7 years old at the time of your father's death, and of course Alexander was devastated. Of course, Eliza attempted to explain what brought this sudden wave of sorrow towards her father. But, at 7 years old, it was all too much to wrap her head around. You understood. "Anyways, Y/N, how old are you?" Alexander questioned in swift attempt to steer the conversation elsewhere.
"I'm fifteen," you responded, meeting his glance. "Philip is fifteen also," Alexander stated, gesturing to his son beside him. Philip nodded. "He's our poet," Eliza giggled, teasing her son. He shook his head in humiliation. "No," he groaned, nearly begging his mother to not continue. Despite his efforts, Eliza began to chant. "My name is Philip, I am a poet-" Philip cut her off with an angered glare. She took the hint near instantly. Angelica giggled, seeming to adore any moment of embarrassment that was brought upon Philip.
"How long do you plan on staying, Adrienne?" The brunette man asked your mother. "Well, I'm not completely sure, but most definitely for a while," she explained, her thick French accent extremely present. "That's great to hear, we'd love to have you for as long as you please," Eliza insisted with a warm, inviting grin. Your mother nodded, obviously thankful. "I speak for both of us when I say we adore your company." You nodded in agreement. The brunette grinned. Angelica squealed. Philip ate. "Y/N, you look like a doll!" Angelica gushed, earning a chuckle from her parents. "I see you've taken a liking to Y/N, Angelica," Eliza chortled. "Yes! She's wonderful!" The small girl beamed.
Your mother grinned at Angelica. "I still can't get over how much you resemble your father, Y/N," Alexander effused, causing you to smile. "Where will you two be staying?" Eliza asked your mother. "I was planning on renting a small townhouse or something," she replied. "Oh, nonsense, we have plenty of extra bedrooms," Eliza protested. "Oh, we wouldn't want to wear out our welcome," your mother disputed in a soft tone. "Please stay here!" Angelica pleaded, giving her the puppy eyes that no sane human could resist. She sighed in defeat. "I suppose, for a few days," she surrendered, causing Eliza and Angelica to squeal with glee.
The six of you finished your meal, conversing about your lives. As soon as Eliza dismissed her, Angelica insisted that you'd come view her room. You agreed, flattered that she'd taken such a liking to you. "These are my dolls, their names are Dolly, Veronica and.. that one can be Y/N!" She exclaimed as she showcased her doll collection. "They're very b-" You were cut off by a voice at the door. "Angelica, won't you stop pestering the poor girl?" Philip monotoned. "I am NOT pestering her!" Angelica defended.
"Yes you are, Ange. No 15 year old cares about your doll collection." The curly-haired boy mocked. "You're just a loser," the girl snarled in a sassy tone. "Says the 9 year old doll collector? Okay, Angelica." Philip cackled, obviously mocking her. "Enough!" Eliza stood behind her son with crossed arms and a disapproving glance. "Apologize to your sister, now." She commanded sternly, a side you hadn't encountered to Eliza. "Sorry," Philip mumbled, walking away from the door. You vowed to yourself that it was best to keep silent during their foolish quarrels. "Y/N, come this way and I'll show you to your bedroom," Eliza's stern expression softened.
She lead you into a decently sized bedroom, which had humdrum white walls and a wooden dresser. "If you need anything, your mother is across the hall and Alexander and I are next door, okay?" Eliza returned to her bedroom. You glanced out of the window, shocked to see that it was already pitch black outside. Time had flown by. The only light sources consisted of the crescent moon, immeasurable stars, and of course faint lights that blared from the city's 'booming' night life. You sighed and stared at the night sky as your mind began to wander.
Could your father possibly be eyeing the same night sky from above? Thoughts like this seemed to keep you sane whilst working through the unimaginable. Suddenly, another small light caught your eye. One that looked as if it was in the yard. One that looked as if it was moving at a steady pace. A lantern. What if someone was trying to break in? Or even worse, commit a murder? These thoughts prompted you to quietly rush down the stairwell. You creaked open the large, yet somehow quiet front door and peered outside carefully.
The lantern's movement halted immediately, as you attempted to make out whom exactly was frolicking around the yard at this hour. "Y/N?" The voice called out, causing you to flinch. "Who's there?" You gulped and whispered, petrified. "Philip," the voice replied. "What are you doing?" You asked, stepping out of the door and closing it gently behind you. "If I tell you, you can not tell my parents. Or Angelica. Or, anyone," Philip shivered, stepping towards you. "I promise." You assured, forming a sincere smile. "I'm, uh, running away," he stammered, placing a hand onto the back of his neck.
You let out a faint gasp. "Why would you want to run away?" You questioned as you stared up at him, the lantern's bright light reflecting. "Well, I-it's just, I feel so alone. And my parents, they're always, uh, occupied with the brat, and, I don't know," Philip confessed with a sigh. You felt a pit in your stomach, not knowing what to say. "Well you aren't alone. You know, I'm here, and your parents would be devastated." You faltered with uncertainty. "I know, I just, have an aspiration to get out of here." He admitted with a sigh. "And some day, you'll be able to, but you can't just frolic off with no explanation at age fifteen. You're being unreasonable. Do not throw away your shot," you demurred with an airy chuckle.
"You're right," he gave in at last. This was your first actual encounter with Philip. You pestering him to not abandon his family for the sole reason of thrill. He probably assumed you were some sort of tattle-tale goody two shoes, which you weren't, however you weren't necessarily a rebel either. The happenstance that you'd been peering out of your window, just as he was about to depart, was horrifying. What if you had already gone to sleep? Eliza and Alexander would be shattered.
Following this uncomfortable confrontation, you simply returned to your bedroom, not knowing what else to say to the boy. You were satisfied that you were able to help, at least. You changed into your nightdress and slid yourself underneath the carefully stitched quilt. You relaxed your head onto the pillow and sighed, closing your eyes and attempting to drift off to sleep. You tossed and turned, hardly being able to get yourself to relax. Your heart and mind were racing, still not comprehending you were finally in America. The land of freedom.
