The next few sections will step by step tell you how to teach the basic behaviours. The main behaviours a pet dog needs to know are Sit, Down, walk nicely on a lead, recall and give up toys/objects.
I teach these commands with the aid of aid of a clicker (a small metal box that makes a click when pressed)
Before you start you need to "charge up" the clicker. This let's the dog know that the click means a treat is on the way. To charge the clicker up have a handfull of treats in one hand and the clicker in the other hand. Click and throw a treat, repeat untill all the treats have gone gradually building up the length of time between the click and the treat until the dog is looking at you for the treat when you click.
