" I did not want it to come to this my Darling." He cried. No, he started to sob. He lowered his head, his golden curls bouncing down along the sides of his face. Shielding his tear-filled eyes from you as he hugged his arms close. " I just wanted everyone else to be gone, for you to not worry anymore and it would be just the two of us forever... but I messed up." He said between cries and sobs.
You held as straight and blank a face as you could. While tears continued to stream down your face, you held an emotionless stare down at him, but he would not meet your eyes. He was hiding himself, almost as if he was too ashamed.
" Are you going to kill me too?" You asked him with a small hiccup in your voice. His head shot up and he looked at you with wide, startled eyes. He held his hands out to you and took a shaking step forward.
" NO! I would never lay a harmful hand upon you!" He cried out, taking another step, but you too one back in unison. You were dangerously close to the edge of the void now.
You turned and looked off the edge and into the nothingness that was underneath. It was a lot darker down there than it was right in front of you.
If you looked closely you could see stars gleaming and twinkling up at you. They were the only lights you could see down there. You could see no comets, no nebulae, no planets. Just distant stars in a pitch-black void.
How far had Donna fallen at this point? You felt guilty for there was no way to save her. Would she fall until she starved to death, or would some kind of cruel magic keep her alive so she fell for a literal eternity?
" I don't understand Varem! Why did you try so hard to make me think there was no monster if it was you the whole time? If you wanted me to stay so badly then why could you have just told me what you were?! I would have listened to you and you know it!" You asked him, gritting your teeth to try and hold your own sobs back.
He went quiet, in fact, he stopped crying completely, though his face was still drenched. His eyes were still that of the lich, making his expression look that much more hallow and empty.
" I was so scared my love. You were the first bit of actual warmth I had felt ever since my brothers abandoned me here. It was as if something feral and untameable started in me then, I had to keep you here and only you." He said though it sounded like he himself did not even really know what he was talking about.
" Though you still would have killed the others?" You asked, and he robotically shook his head.
" I eat the souls, its how I remain intact... Its how I keep what's left of my human side and not lose myself fully to the curse that turns me into the living dead." He explained, quickly holding his hands back up and making you flinch. " But with you! I don't need to devour any more souls! With your love that keeps me warm, I can remain Varem and we can be together forever!... We never have to be lonely again my love... don't you want that." He asked with a break in his voice.
The tears started flowing out from his eyes again, and he held his hands close to his heart. It was as if he was trying to hold it together or else it would shatter apart in his ribcage.
You too could not hold in your cries and sobs anymore. Your eyes clenched shut as you scrunched up your face. wrapping your arms around yourself and huddling close much as Varem had done just a moment ago.
The dears dripped off of your face and down onto the grass. You could have sworn that with every droplet that landed on the blades, a little chime sounding like a tiny bell would ring out. Though it was very quiet, and you were not sure if you actually heard that or not.
