Chapter 11

"I don't know about this. I don't think I should have come." I whispered to AJ as we walked in, Monica and Jordan trailing behind. AJ pulled me closer. "You'll be fine. But if it gets too much, just say the word and we'll leave." He promised. I nodded.

"Amber!" Angie screamed when she saw me. She ran up to me in her dress that she bought with me, Monica, and Janice. I could barely hear her because the music was cranked. She ran up and threw her arms around me. I didn't let go of AJ's hand. "Oh my gosh! I just can't believe you're here!" Angie squealed. I laughed, but I don't know if she could hear me. "Yeah, well it's sorta good to be here." Angie rolled her eyes. "You're gonna have fun! Trust me! Hey, Bubba's here! He's been bugging me saying 'when do you think Amber's gonna be here' and 'are you sure she's coming'." Now it was my turn to roll my eyes. "Oh Bubba..." I shook my head and laughed. Angie laughed too. "Yeah, oh! And Blake's here too. Just thought you might wanna...well you know." My eyes got big. "B-Blake's here?" I stuttered. She nodded and raised her eyebrows. "Yep, I'll see you around." She patted me on the shoulder and walked back to Monica and Jordan.

I turned to AJ and he raised his eyebrows. "You gonna ditch me now for Bubba and Blake?" He asked mostly jokingly. But I could tell he was kind of serious. I thought for a minute but then shook my head. "No. I just..." I sighed. AJ stared at me. The music continued to blare. "Let's go someplace... quieter." He suggested as we walked into the kitchen, where food lined the table. AJ turned me around so that I was facing him and kissed my forehead. Then he pulled me closer to him. My ear was against his chest and I could hear him breathing. His chest went up and down as we just stood there. Then I finally looked up at him. "I need to find them." He sighed. "I knew you would." I expected him to be a little mad but he smiled. "I understand. You shouldn't have to just hang out with me. I mean you have other friends." I smiled and pecked him on the lips. "Thank you. You're the best boyfriend ever." I said. "Okay. Well, I'll catch up with you later I guess. Don't worry. I know my way around Angie's." He said with a smile. I nodded and kissed him. I started to walk away, then I turned around to look back at AJ. He was already talking to some guy from his football team and grabbing some chips off of the table. I smiled and continued to look for Bubba and Blake.

Bubba picked me up and swung me around, giving me one of his famous bear hugs. "Uh...Bubba." Bubba set me down. "Oh, sorry. Too much?" I nodded, panting for breathe. "Just a little." Bubba shrugged. "So, what's up?" He asked with the biggest smile across his face. I shrugged. "Not much." He nodded. "Cool, cool. I'm just so glad you're here! Did you come with anyone...oh. Never mind." His face dropped, but he still managed to keep his smile. I nodded. "Yeah, I came with AJ." Bubba nodded. "Yeah...that's right you guys are 'official'." He did the air quotations around official. I laughed. "Yeah. I guess." I'm surprised that Bubba could even hear me. It's almost like they turned the music up. Then the song switched from 'Dynamite' by Taio Cruz to 'Just Dance' by Lady Gaga.

"Oh! I love this song!" Bubba yelled as it began. "Will you dance with me?" He asked, stretching out his hand. I stared at it. "I-I...uh..." I looked toward the kitchen, thinking of what AJ would think. "Come on. Just one song." He begged. "I...uh..." I sighed. "Okay Bubba. Just one song." I agreed. He smiled and I took his hand.

We headed into the middle of the dance floor. Just dance, gonna be ok, da doo doo, just dance, spin that record babe, da doo doo... The song played. Bubba grabbed my hands and started dancing. I rolled my eyes and stood there for a second, then started slowly dancing. Bubba's smile stretched across his face. "See you can dance." He exclaimed. I half smiled. He swayed my hands back and forth and jumped up and down. I mirrored his motions. He moved to the left. I moved to the left. He jumped. I jumped. He stepped back. I stepped back. One thing about Bubba, I always had fun with him.

We danced until 'Just Dance' ended and 'Raise Your Glass' by P!nk came on. I laughed and lead Bubba back to the edges of the room. "That was so fun!" I yelled over the music. Bubba laughed. "I know, right! I swear you really know how to get the party started!"

I silently laughed in my head. Me getting any party started was just a funny thought. Anyone who knew me would know that. Yet, anyone who really knew me would know that I can get the party started. Maybe Bubba was a better friend then I realized.

So I laughed in response. I turned to look back at the kitchen and saw AJ standing in the doorway with his arms crossed, looking back at me. I blushed, but in the disco lights and darkness I don't think anyone could see me. Even Bubba. AJ raised an eyebrow then smiled, pretty much telling me it's okay. I didn't think it was okay. Me dancing first with someone other than my date? I'd be pissed if I was AJ. I looked back at Bubba.

"What? Something wrong?" Bubba asked, concerned. It took me a second to respond, but I shook my head. "No. It's nothing. It's just..." I couldn't find the words. "It's just...I got to go Bubba. I'll see you later." Bubba looked at me, then shrugged. "Okay. What ever you say." I started to walk away, but he grabbed my arm. "Hey, thanks for the dance. I really...really enjoyed it." I smiled. "Anytime Bubba. I really enjoyed it too." He let go of my arm, smiled, then winked at me. "See ya' around, Amber." I continued to smile in return. I didn't want Bubba to get the wrong picture. I know Bubba, and I know how he feels about me. I just don't feel the same. I hope I'll never have to tell him that though.

My eyes flew back to doorway to the kitchen. But, AJ wasn't there anymore. Huh, weird. Then something hit me. I need to find Blake still. I sighed even thinking about Blake. Oh Blake...interesting little boy. He's actually not a little boy anymore, but I still call him that. When we were littler, I would always call him a little boy, just to annoy him pretty much. I had so much catching up to do with him. Suddenly, I really wanted to find Blake. And, ironic enough, I turned around and saw my partner in crime, standing there, looking back at me.
