Chapter 13

It took me almost an hour to get Monica and Jordan to leave. It would be "Oh, just one second. I have to go tell this person something," Or "Oh wait, I forgot to do this," And Jordan, of course, just followed her. Then I found Angie by the snack table after about a million times of looking there. I told her thanks for inviting me and how much of a great party it was, even though it wasn't that exciting to me. She didn't really mind that I was leaving. Actually she was probably a bit irritated because she was talking to this cute boy and I was probably interrupting their conversation.

Before I knew it, it was just me and AJ sitting in the car in my driveway. He put the car in park and turned to me, his expression a bit concerned. "What?" I asked. Why did he look so concerned? I thought everything went fine. His expression lightened a bit, but was still strong enough to show through that he was worried. "Oh nothing. I was just...thinking." He decided. "About what? Clue me in." I insisted. He sighed unwillingly. "Well, I just was thinking about you...at the party." He spoke carefully. I nodded. "Okay, go on." I urged. He hesitated. "Well, it's just me and you. I don't want it to interfere with anything. I saw the way you looked at Bubba. I see the way he makes you feel. And what about...oh what's that kids name..." He snapped his fingers trying to remember. "Blake?" I asked, a little disgusted.

Not in Blake or Bubba, but at the fact that AJ might think I actually like them. I do like them. But not in that way. I mean they're really close friends but...that's all they'll ever be. "Yeah. Him. So, are you sure you still want to be together? Because I totally understand if you don't. If you have feelings for someone else, I totally understand."

My eyes got wide. "NO! Not at all! No way! I mean, sure I'm kind of close to them, but not in that way! I will never like them in that way!" He rolled his eyes. "Okay, maybe not Blake. But Bubba. He makes you feel good. He makes you laugh. He even got you to dance! I don't even think I could do that." I shook my head. "Because you don't want me to do stuff you know I don't like. That's all Bubba wants me to do. He wants me to go to party's, dance, be social. I'm not that type of person. You accept me for who I am. You don't try to change me." I smiled contently at how well I worded everything.

AJ smiled back. "Okay. I'll accept that. But, I'm not fully convinced yet." He pecked me on the lips and chuckled. "Okay. You should probably get going." He whispered. I sighed in annoyance. "Can't we just go somewhere? Like we did on our date? A beach? Anything?" I begged. He laughed again and then shook his head. "I don't know anywhere to go. And besides, your mom said to be home by midnight, remember?" I rolled my eyes. "Oh she wont care! Come on!" I leaned in to kiss him again but he retreated. I fell and my head hit his thigh. I immediately adjusted myself so I was sitting upright again. That was a little embarrassing...

"Fine." I pouted and opened the door. Right before I stepped out of the car, AJ grabbed my wrist. "Hey." He said. I stared at him, waiting for the rest. He chuckled a little uncomfortably. "Believe me. I want to, but...I don't want your mom to be mad or anything for taking you home late. I've dated girls who have mom's like that and...whew, not pretty." I smiled. "Aw, you're sweet." I replied, and kissed him on the cheek.

Why weren't we actually kissing each other? What was so wrong with that? We've done it before. Him with the forehead, and me with the cheek? Sure, he'll peck me on the lips, but it's nothing meaningful. It's kind of like the way adults kiss each other when leaving for work. I think the last time he kissed me meaningfully was on our date. Ever since then he's kind of...shut down. Maybe it's just my imagination. "See you at school." AJ said, raising his eyebrows up and down playfully. I laughed. "Okay. Bye." I shut the door and AJ sped off. He left me standing in my driveway staring down the road. Hoping that he'll turn around and come back, but he didn't. I sighed and walked into my house. Within minutes I was asleep.

"You coming to Ivy's pool party?" Bubba enthused. I rolled my eyes. "I don't know Bubba...I wasn't that exciting at the last party." I said, trying to concentrate at what Mr. Hinley was writing on the board. Bubba didn't seem to care. Bubba scoffed. "Are you kidding me? You were the hit of the party!" I shook my head. "Somehow, I highly doubt that Bubba. Actually, I almost find that impossible." Bubba rolled his eyes. "Oh come on! You need to live life a little, Amber! Be a little reckless! You cant just sit there reading a book in a dusty old attic until your eighty!" I've never heard someone put it that way before. Yet again, it is Bubba. "I don't know..." I looked at Bubba's journal and he didn't have any notes written down. "Uh, Bubba? Are you even gonna write anything down" He looked at me, then at the board, and finally shrugged. "I don't really feel liked it." He said nonchalantly. I scoffed and continued copying down what was on the board.

"So will you come?" Bubba asked again. "No talking." Mr. Hinley reminded, sitting at his desk, looking over the rim of his glasses at me and Bubba. My face heated up a bit and I got back to copying. Bubba ignored him, but talked a little quieter. "Please! I'll be your best friend! Come on! The whole football team's gonna be there and the Cheerleaders! And Angie and all of those guys too. It'll be fun!" I sighed. "Okay, Bubba. You're too convincing." I laughed quietly. His face lit up. "So you will come!" He chuckled. "Yes!"

Mr. Hinley looked at us, then shook his head and went back to grading paper's. I didn't particularly like Mr. Hinley. He wasn't the greatest teacher in the world. He was kind of a nerd, but he wasn't bad either. He just is the most boring class out of my whole day. But it's the only class I have with Bubba, well, besides PE.

The bell rung and I gathered my stuff together. "Remember to read chapters one through five!" Mr. Hinley yelled, as everyone ran out of the class room. I was almost out of the door when I heard Mr. Hinley say, "Uh, Amber? May I see you a moment, please?"
