Two stops for gas, one stop for food, and countless bickering over the radio station later we finally arrived. At every stop light, Nathan would point at something different and tell me about a memory or two he had of that place. It was a satisfying feeling to see him so happy back in his home town. The town was no Miami, but it seemed very…cozy. He pointed out his old school, the playground his mom used to take him and Jess to, where he rode his bike, etc. He was so excited and practically bouncing in his seat.
When we pulled up to a nice looking house, he parked the car in the empty space in the drive way and turned it off. That’s when the nerves started to return. Just being outside the house, I felt my stomach flip and the tension travel up my arms and shoulders,
“Relax, Tori, they’ll love you” he said reassuringly, gripping my hand and kissing me before getting out the car.
He opened the door for me and helped me out. My hand was tense in his as we walked to the front door. He knocked on the door and we waited. The sound of children’s laughter and a dog barking nearby seemed to relax a bit of tension. The door opened and that tension came right back,
“Nathan!” a woman said excitedly, pulling him into a hug.
“Mum” Nathan replied with a chuckle.
She seemed very lovely, his mum, tall and thin, with similar features to Nath. Her hair was more blonde than brown and her eyes were a different shade as well. I could still easily see the relation between her and Nath,
“Ah, you must by Victoria, yes?” she asked with a smile, her attention turning to me.
I nodded.
“Please, just Tori, it’s great to finally meet you” I said politely.
“We’ve heard all about you, please, come in” she said, beckoning us inside.
It was nice and warm in the house. Pictures of Nathan and his sister when they were younger hung all along the walls. I smelled something amazing and was thankful to finally eat something that wasn’t fried or wrapped in paper and came with fries.
“You are so much more beautiful in person” Nathan’s mum complimented, having us sit in the living room.
“Thank you… your house is very lovely” I replied nervously brushing a strand of hair behind my ear.
“Where’s Jess?” Nathan asked, his hand never leaving mine.
“Upstairs, go and get her will you?” she replied, nodding towards the staircase.
He patted my hand before leaving me along with his mother.
“You’re the first girlfriend Nathan’s brought home in years, you must be quite special to him” his mother said gently, smiling at me.
“He’s a really great guy…” I said, not sure how to respond to that.
“And you’re… Jay’s cousin, correct?” she asked.
“Tom’s…that’s kind of how we met… I was visiting Tom at the time when he and Nath still lived together and…it all started from there” I explained briefly.
Feet came bounding down the stairs, sounding like a stampeded of small horses. Moments later, a beautiful young girl stood in front of me,
“Hi, I’m Jess” she said, smiling brightly.
“Hi, Tori” I replied, shaking her hand.
“I know… I absolutely loved you on Strictly Come Dancing” she said.
