Chapter 5: The Date

"Hey Katnip? How are you?"
How dare he ask me that. I don't even know what I'm feeling right now.
"What do you want, Gale?"
"Two things. First, I know this probably means nothing, but I am so sorry. I never meant for her to die. I had no idea what Coin was going to use the bombs for. I would never intentionally hurt Prim. She was like a sister to me."
There was a pause. Tears are coming down my face. I cry too much.
"Second, I just wanted you to know that I'm coming to 12 tomorrow. I thought you'd rather know now than see me randomly when I get there."
Silence. He's waiting for my reply.
"We need to talk. Come see me whenever you get here."
I need to clear somethings up.
"Okay. I-"
"Katniss?" It's Peeta calling me from the kitchen.
"Look Gale, I gotta go now. I'll see you tomorrow, okay?"
"Okay. Bye Katnip."
I smile. I actually did miss hearing him say that.
"Bye Gale."
I hang up and walk to the kitchen.
"Yes?"
He turns and smiles at me.
"Who was that?"
"Dr. Aurelius. Why are you so happy?"
"Do you want to go on a picnic?"
What?
"A picnic? With you?"
His smile falls.
"Yeah. But if you don't want to I under-"
"I'd love to Peeta. When?"
"For lunch, so like an hour? I'm gonna go see Haymitch then get everything ready, then I'll come get you."
I smile.
"Sounds great. I'll be ready."
I kiss his cheek then run upstairs to get ready. What to wear?
I go to my closet and pick a dark green dress about the length of my knees. I decide to curl my hair for once. Why not? I grab the curler out of the beauty supplies my prep team left last time they were here. I miss them. After a while my hair is perfect. Nice job Everdeen. I go to put on my makeup next. I don't do anything dramatic, just simple and light. Once I'm done there's 15 minutes left until Peeta is supposed to get here. I spend that time looking for shoes. I finally find some silver sparkly flats. They'll have to do.
Just then I hear Peeta calling me down. I look in the mirror one last time. I hope I look okay.
I walk down the stairs and see Peeta, who looks amazing and hot, holding a picnic basket. His jaw drops when he sees me. I guess I really don't know the effect I have on him, as he told me before.
"Let's go."
He smiles and grabs my hand with his free one. The walk to the lake is a far one. As we get closer it starts to remind me of what would've happened if Peeta didn't stop me. It's starting to bring on bad thoughts. Why am I alive? I should have died. I should be dead right now. I want to be-
"Hey, are you okay?"
I break out of my thoughts and smile at him.
"Yeah, I'm fine."
"You sure?"
"Yeah, totally."
Lie, lie, lie. That's all I do now.
We continue to walk until we get there. When we do Peeta lays a blanket down for us to sit on. We sit and he starts pulling out food. Oh my god I do not deserve him.
"Cheese buns and lamb stew? Yay!"
Two of my favourite food that I haven't eaten in a long time. I hug him tight and start eating a cheese bun. I look up and he's starting at me.
"What?" I say with my mouth full.
He chuckles and shakes his head.
"Nothing. You're just really cute."
I look down and blush.
"Thanks."
I look up and he has a shocked expression on his face.
"Oh my god! Katniss Everdeen actually accepted a compliment."
I laugh and push him playfully.
"Shut up!"
He smirks. "Make me."
I smirk back at him. "Okay."
I lean towards him and place a soft kiss on his lips. He's surprised at first, but when I pull away he grabs my neck and pulls me back. This is the first real kiss we've had in a long time. And it feels good.
We kiss for what feels like hours then we finish our food and head back to our house. Today was a very good day. Why? I was happy for once in a long time thanks to Peeta. I owe him so much, but myself is all I can give to him right now. I hope that's enough.
