Tip #5

(For the sake of the chapter, side characters are any characters who don't have the role of antagonist, mastermind, or protagonist.)

Besides your antagonist, protagonist, and mastermind, there are a lot of characters who need to not be paper thin.

I hope you're ready for a ton of character development.

First, you need to make a list of names and talents. Follow the tips from the talent chapter and don't use crazy names like Sparkle Unicorn Cupcake Star.

So now you have a cast list, and you know who the three big characters are. Let's just leave the other characters be, no one will care!

Except, they will.

Those side characters are the characters that can't take the pressure. They snap and kill, or they are killed. Your job is to make their motives realistic.

I'll cover this more in my murder chapter, but you want the motive to play off of your character's insecurities, dreams, or fears. You can't do that if your characters have the character development of an empty cardboard box.

I don't care if this character dies first. They still have the same character rights as all other characters.

Character Bill Of Rights:

-Each and every character is entitled to a backstory of their own.

-Every character has the right to some degree of personal growth.

-Each character has the right to doubt themselves or their talents.

-Each and every character cannot be replaced with someone else.

-Each character is allowed to feel emotions in their own ways.

Do not leave your side characters behind.

I won't read your fangame if your side characters are terrible. I won't read it if I can't relate to your side characters. Make your side characters stand out!

Remember how I was talking about protagonists having mental breakdowns? Make your other characters have mental breakdowns!

Make sure that in some way, their deaths impact the other students.

For example...

Lotus Weisser the Ultimate Singer and Matthew Banks the Ultimate Guitarist.

Lotus is the culprit in chapter two, and Matthew is the victim of chapter four. They both have a friend named Aika Fujiwara, who is also a side character.

In chapter two, Aika and Matthew are forced to participate in Lotus's execution. Lotus's death is tragic for both Aika and Matthew, and it only gets worse in chapter four. Matthew takes an arrow to the chest to protect Aika, and in the process, she loses her best friend. All this time, Aika has been a selective mute, but after the death of her friends, she slowly finds her voice, and in the process her confidence. She was able to get better in the aftermath of one of the greatest tragedies of her life. All of these characters are side characters. Without them though, this game would have been completely different.

(And yes, because when I made Aika, I was older and wiser than when I made Eliana, so I did do my research on selective mutism.)
