Mia wasn't a 'funny' kid. She struggled to understand people and how they acted, how many of them went through life without any major breakdowns, pain or suffering— they were far too reserved for her. Her emotions were ridiculously heightened, so she never acted the same as others, and was never treated the same due to this; screaming like her femurs had shattered whenever something went wrong, no matter how important— she reacted wholeheartedlyevery single time.
Of course, this proved itself to be a curse when she failed to notice how strange her dad was acting. She pushed all worry aside and went on her way. It wasn't until a loud bang echoed through their shitty apartment complex did she feel the worry pop up again, settling in her stomach. She didn't notice things that were, to everyone else, painfully obvious; her 'best' example of this is when her 4-year-old self failed to distinguish the difference between red face paint and the goop that splattered on the wall, oozing out from where her father lay, she didn't know that it wasn't supposed to be smeared across your cheeks like face paint, she didn't notice, she didn't know.
It was a deadly thing, her naivety. It pained her to no end, wrenching her soul into pieces as every time she forgot something, every time she failed to notice something, she was thrown back to that badly-lit living room, the pale beige walls dotted with red, hands painted the same colour as her father's insides, chubby cheeks glowing the same hue. Each time, she felt her lungs constrict, her eyes watered and her body collapsed, screams clawing out of her throat like titans of fear and pain and sadness.
She plastered on a fake smile, fingers twitching to readjust her mask, thanking her mother for her ability to change her face, "Momma, please don't let me mess this up now. It's been so long since anyone realised"—but soon enough, someone realised, and he realised every single time.
