THE COLD waves of the ocean lapped at Diana's tiny feet as she sat on the beach. The nearly full moon shined brightly, lighting up her young, tanned face and emphasizing the natural twinkle in her wide, chocolate brown eyes. The occasional rumble of cars down the cobblestone roads behind her, and the faint echoing laughter of drunken partiers occupied bits of the silence in the sleeping town. The soft crashing of the water against the sand and the sound of her breathing were the only constant sounds she heard.

A gentle smile played on her lips as she watched a family of seagulls fly overhead. Diana took a small bite of her fresas con crema, savoring the sweetness of the dessert. She felt a small poke in her side which broke her out of the comfortable silence.

"Cómo te sientes, mija?" Diana's father, Raul, asked. He stared at her with eyes, identical to hers, that sparkled with a sort of amusement. He knew when his daughter told him that her stomach hurt and the only way to heal it was by getting fresas con crema that she was lying, but since it amused him so much, he got it for her anyway.

"Mucho mejor, papá." Diana grinned at her father, Raul mirroring her expression, and they fell back into a comfortable silence. Diana couldn't feel happier than she did at that moment. Even though they were still adapting to their new life in America, Apalachicola, Florida to be exact, and they were struggling to make ends meet, as well as to learn English, she couldn't help but feel at peace at this moment. She was spending time with her father, a rarity nowadays since he worked many double shifts, and she was enjoying the scenery that was offered in her new, small town.

It's always been just the two of them. Back in Oaxaca, they didn't have any family. Raul hadn't talked to them in years. He had been a single parent since she was born. According to him, her mother left them very soon after Diana arrived in the world. She couldn't stay, as she wasn't allowed to, but Diana wasn't sure what she believed.

When Raul told her about her mother, he would say that she was the kindest, most beautiful woman he had ever known. He would talk about how lucky he was that a woman like her had taken a chance on a man like him. She brought a sense of peace and comfort wherever she went, and he fell in love with her shortly after meeting her. When they had Diana, it was the happiest day of his life. Even when her mother told him solemnly that she had to go, he felt no ill-will toward her. She bid the two of them goodbye and left without a trace. Raul never told Diana where she went, but she always had a feeling he knew.
