I'm lovesick.

You're probably confused. I am completely in love with Keefe Sencen.

I'm confusing myself! Okay, Keefe is my best friend. He has been since we were 12 and now 5 years later we are still inseparable. But the problem is when I was 14 he became attractive. I mean, don't get me wrong he was cute before but now I'm talking, smirk instead of smile, tan, abs, some muscle if you will- you get the point.

I'm not just attracted to him because he's incredibly good looking. No! He's so funny and sweet and always just, there. Making sure I'm having a great time. Always making sure I'm happy.

Anyway, my best friend Biana has been saying for years, "Soph! You have totally got it for Keefe! You're just in denial." And she was right of course, but recently Keefe did something so incredibly amazing I couldn't even deny it anymore. BUt then something so terrible it left me even more broken.

Let me take you back to last night.

So I work at this bookstore in the mall. Last night I was closing the store close to 10pm when a familiar blonde boy comes into the aisle I was finishing rearranging. He looked like he had run here from mars. He was panting, hands on his knees, taking off his hat and throwing it on the ground dropping to his knees thanking god he had a place to rest-  okay I'll be serious.

"Keefe?" I asked in shock. "What are you doing here we are just about to close."

"I- I had to come talk to you," He panted. "Very important."

I stood up from where i was kneeling. "You couldn't have called me when I was finished work?"

He held up a finger singling me to hold on so he could catch his breath. After a moment he continued, "well it's about books."

"We also open tomorrow, dork." I smiled.

"You never make anything easy for me do you, Soph?"

The way he said my name- no my nickname mind you, almost made me collapse on the floor. Collapsing would have been better because I knew he could see the blush creeping up to my cheeks.

I sighed. "I guess not. So what do you need? I'm going to have to kick you out in a few minutes."

"Well, Biana said your favourite book is Percy Jackson."

"Okay..."

"And I want to read it." He shrugged.

Let me cut in for a second. Are you seeing what just happened? When you tell someone about something you really love and they go try it or listen to it- whatever, and actually like it? That's the best feeling ever!

Right then and there, I just stared into his eyes with my mouth agape. Suddenly I didn't know where to put my hands. Where do you put your hands when you talk to someone? Especially your crush who just said they want to read your favourite books?

"I- Um, really? Why?" I stammered.

He laughed. "Well I hear you have good taste, and you never stop talking about it so..."

"Um... yeah! Of course. So you want to read the classic series I'm guessing?" I started to lead him over the the Children/YA section.

"Yeah. I think the first book is called, The Lightning Thief?"

Mhm, just as you did, I melted.

"This is amazing, Keefe! Now we can talk all about it!"

He smiled. "One of the reasons I wanted to read it. So i can talk to you more about stuff that's important to you."

I blushed, more than I was before, and scanned the shelf for the book.

I frowned. "That's weird we don't have it in stock. I have a copy at home if you want to borrow it."

His beautiful, icy blue eyes gleamed. "I thought you would never ask."

And so, I finished up at work and Keefe and I took the late bus back to my house. My parents were on a date, so I luckily didn't have to deal with questions. Then i realized it's not much different because Keefe is my best friend, and is always at my house. So why was I so nervous?

We ran up the steps to my room and he sat on my bed. I found the book on my desk and tossed it to him. "Well, enjoy!"

"Getting rid of me already?" He smirked.

I sat next to him fidgeting with my hands.

"Why are you acting so nervous lately?"

"What?" I said a little to loud. "Sorry. I don't know," I lied "I guess I'm just stressed with exams and all."

He didn't look convinced. "You can tell me anything, Soph."

I looked away. "I'm okay. Or I will be."

"Tell me. Please, I want to help." He pleaded.

"No, it's just-" What was i supposed to have said? I'm madly in love with you and I want to be yours?"

"What?" He whispered, lightly cupping my cheek and turning my head towards him.

We stared into each others eyes for what felt like eternity. I resisted the urge to just spit out everything I had been holding in for years, that didn't even know I had been holding in. He had that affect on me.

Keefe closed his eyes and brought my face closer it his. Oh my god!! He's going to kiss me!

Although it was almost like he was trying not to. I pulled away and stood up.

"I-" He started.

"No, Keefe." I ran my hands through my hair, did he really think he could lead me on like that? "You can't just do all this stuff to make me fall in love with you, and- and then come to my work doing all that stuff, and coming here and almost kissing me, but then obviously not wanting to! Why do you want to drive me to insanity!"

"Soph-"

"Stop! Just stop talking. Stop calling me that, stop acting sweet, stop making me laugh and making me happy, stop being there for me, just stop!"

He stood up slowly coming over to me. "Soph- Sophie. I didn't mean to hurt you. One moment I was thinking that I shouldn't act on my feelings because I didn't want our friendship to be ruined, and then the next I wanted to fall completely, madly in love with you."

I heard the car door slam outside. My parents were home. "So what? You just mess around with my feelings? Did you ever think about how this might be affecting me?"

"Sophie?" My mom's voice called from downstairs.

"Are you home?" My dad called.

I pretended I didn't hear them. "You are completely ruining my life, Keefe! I've been in love with you since we were fourteen! And you knew it! You knew something had changed between us and you just kept kissing other girls, and- and leading me on! What is wrong with you?" I sobbed.

"Sophie please. I-I'm sorry. I was serious about wanting to make it up, but then our friendship-"

I heard footsteps down the hallway.

"What about it? We will never know what we could've been because you were too afraid to act on it. What's wrong with getting to know someone before dating them? Everyone already thinks we're dating so what's your deal?"

My door burst open. "What is going on in here?" My mom asked frantically.

I cried even harder I thought I was going to throw up. "Just get out." I managed.

"Soph-" Keefe tried. My tears were clouding my vision but I could tell he was crying to.

"Everyone! Just leave!" I dropped down to the floor and put my head my head between my knees, tasting the saltiness of my tears.
