Wall

four sides built make a home
a structure that supports the roof
over my head, that keeps me
safe from the elements.

but how about the numbness,
the race inside my chest
that makes it harder to breathe,
a bomb running out of time.

it's your voice that caresses
which soothes me to reality,
my favourite embrace
that slows down time
moves me to the rhythm
of the pitter-patter of rain
against the roof you've built
over my body, and soul.

your love envelops me
in ways I could never have dreamed
protects me from the storm
that has the capacity to rage inside me,
your sweet whispers
promises of always, holds me
grounds the roots that I've grown
ones I'm learning to share with you.

like the four walls that built
to support a home only ours,
you're my wall
as much as I am yours.
