“So are you ready for the party tomorrow?”
That’s a good question. It’s been a few days since I agreed—somewhat reluctantly—to go with Patrick to the party. It’s now game five of the series, and if we win tonight we advance. That also means that tomorrow night is the team party, if we win. If we lose it’s postponed until after the last game of the series.
“It might not be tomorrow you know,” I say. I don’t really believe that though.
“Yeah right,” I’ve earned sarcasm it appears. “If they lose this game everyone will be shocked. You included.”
“It’s possible,” I whisper. Again, I don’t actually believe my words. Looking at the lopsided score of six to one in favor of the Blackhawks I am ninety-eight percent this game is over. Especially since there’s only four minutes left in the game.
“You’re impossible,” Kailey mutters before turning back to the game, which is resuming. She has a great view too, since her boyfriend got her tickets right on the ice. He was nice enough to get her two, so I could come with.
I have to say sitting on the ice for a game is an experience. It’s always insanely fun to be at a game, but this is something completely different. The energy down here is palpable. Every time someone slams into the boards, every time the puck comes this way, every time you can see the players right there in front of you, it’s like a switch flips inside. I can feel my blood racing and my breathing pick up. The first time we scored Kailey and I jumped up and started victory dancing, matching idiot grins on our faces. We’d do that anyway, but being so close to the ice meant that the team saw us. And since it was her boyfriend who scored, he was right there to laugh at our horrible dancing. But it was okay because we were laughing too. It was a great moment, and the more the game went on the more fun we had. Now the game is almost over and with such a huge lead I’m starting to worry about what that means.
“Go. Go, go GO!” Kailey is up on her feet, screaming, and the entire United Center is with her. Toews gets a breakaway and speeds down the ice. I stand up, screaming with everyone else. Then the volume in the rink gets ten times louder when the captain scores another goal, his third for the night. Hats fly onto the ice as his team surrounds him in celebration.
“Your boyfriend just got a hat trick!” I scream unnecessarily in my excitement. Kailey nods, her hands over her mouth almost crying. “Kailey a freaking hat trick!”
“I know!” I can’t tell if she’s laughing or crying but it’s either one or both. She leans up against the glass for support. “He told me he was feeling good about this game earlier but a hat trick! This is insanely amazing!”
I have a feeling this means more to her for a different reason. This is his first hat trick since they started dating. She confessed to me a while ago that he told her when he got his first hat trick as her boyfriend he had a surprise for her. I think that whatever this surprise is, she’s going to find out tonight. My guess is he dedicated these goals to her as well, even though that’s technically not a thing.
“You’re going to have a hell of a night later,” I joke with her once everyone’s calmed down some. She blushes but tries to laugh it off. I’m not buying but I let it go for now.
