I stood nervously in the doorway, feeling unsure of whether I should talk to my mother about what happened or not. Okuyasu seemed a bit tense as well, and for good reason. What if she didn't like the fact that we were together? What if she told him she never wanted to see him with me again? Gosh, this is why I didn't want to tell her. It's so anxiety enducing. I took a deep breath and shook out my hands, trying my best to put on a straight face and calm down. I put my hand on the door and pushed it open, my heart beating against my chest. Very quickly, the smell of breakfast hit me. I shambled out of my room and down the hall, Okuyasu following closely behind me. My stomach seemed to flip as I walked into the kitchen, my mother immediately taking notice of us. She nods to the table, motioning for us to sit, which we do.
"Alright, so." My mom started, her eyes all over the room, but not on either of us. "Didn't think I'd have to have this conversation yet, but here we go." She took a deep breath as a blush spread across my face. I stared down at the table, half expecting her to yell at me. "Uh... So Josuke..." She starts, not being exactly sure how to continue. "God I wish your father were here.. well, are you by any chance gay?" I felt myself internally and externally cringe, my chest seemingly about to explode as I slowly nodded. From beside me, I can see Okuyasu uncomfortably shifting in his seat, his face also red. My mom took a deep breath. "Okay, that's fine." She sighs and rubs her eyes, seemingly trying to prepare herself for what she was about to ask.
"Alright. Are you two a thing now or.." She asked, her voice trailing off. I looked over to Okuyasu and grabbed his hand from under the table. I reluctantly nodded, feeling like I was about to throw up. What if she didn't let me see him? What if she didn't want me around him anymore? She nodded. "That's fine, I just... Did you.." She stuttered slightly as she spoke. Is she insinuating what I think she might be insinuating?
"Mom." I say boldly. "No." She lets out a sigh of relief and puts her head in her hands. "Thank goodness. Well, you're free to go." She pauses for a moment before opening her mouth again. "I honestly should have known anyway." She got up and left the room, leaving Okuyasu and I sitting there silently. That could have gone a lot worse. Okuyasu lets out a sigh and puts his head in his hands.
"Dude, that was terrifying!" He exclaims. "I thought she was going to kill me!" He looked back up and me and I nodded. I honestly thought the same thing, though it was stupid of me to think that. My mom will always love me, she's always been like that. Though strict, she did it all out of love.
"Yeah, me too honestly." I said, my face still fairly red from the conversation. "We should head to school, the alarm is about to ring anyway." He nodded with a sigh. I glanced at him as we got up and headed to the door. He looked nervous, and I hated that he felt bad. "Hey, you alright?" I asked quietly. He just nodded and sighed. He left without another word, leaving me to trail behind him. I quickly caught up and grabbed his hand.
"Well, if you say so." I added with a slight frown. "But if those guys say anything to you again let me know." He told Okuyasu, who just nodded, a slight smile forming on his lips. That's better. I like his smile. We walked to school together, gradually regaining our usual loudness, our conversations quickly being overpowered by laughter. This is good. I want it to stay like this with us forever.
Eventually we had to part ways to get to our different first classes, but I didn't let him leave me before I gave him a quick kiss on the cheek, which happened to make us both red. He just giggled and waved goodbye before walking to his class. God, my heart might explode if he would always be so adorable. In my first period class I talked a lot with Koichi, until the topic of those guys throwing notes came up.
"Yeah, both Yukako and I noticed that yesterday." He stated with a sigh. "They're just immature asses, try not to worry much about it." He told the other with a smile. "Plus, I don't really think they're going to do much to you now." I immediately gave him a confused look.
"What do you mean?" I asked him, my confusion very visible on my face. He looked surprised at the fact that I didn't know. "What... What did you do?" I asked with a sigh. He chuckled softly and looked away.
"Well you know how Yukako is, don't you?" He said with a smile. "How she is when she knows I don't like something or if someone hurts a person I'm close to?" Josuke have him a look.
"Don't tell me she-" he paused and rubbed his eyes. "Did she kill them?" He asked.
"No! No, absolutely not!" Koichi defended, a look of panic rising to his face. "I wouldn't let her do that!" I let out a sigh of relief.
"Oh thank god-" I mumbled out with a chuckle. I looked back up at him and gestured for him to continue with whatever he had been saying. He sighed and rolled his eyes.
"Don't just assume she killed them. All she did was talk some sense into them. Well, moreso scream." He admitted with a slight chuckle. "But anyway, point remains that when she broke someone's leg they all got a bit more compliant." I was instantly wide eyed again.
"Dude, she's going to get herself into serious trouble." I told him. He sighed and nodded. He of course already knew that. "She's too violent. But please, tell her I said thank you." Koichi nodded and told the other he would. Time went on and classes went by. As Koichi had said, nobody bothered him. I hoped everything was the same for Okuyasu.
Soon, first period rolled to an end, and Koichi said his goodbyes to me before we parted. In the halls, I passed by Okuyasu, who quickly stopped me. "Hey, lets spend lunch break up in the empty classroom again." He said with a smile. "If you want to, of course." I quickly nodded.
"Of course I want to, dummy. I'll see you there." I told him with a smile. He certainly seemed to be happier, so that's probably a good sign. He nodded and walked off to his next class. I turned back away with a goofy smile. He was just so darn cute.
The day went by fairly quickly. Everything seemed so good, so wonderful and nice. I seemingly had no worries at all, which was odd, but I wouldn't question it at all. It was a very nice change of pace. Eventually, lunch time rolled around. I did notice some glances from the boys who had thrown the notes, but none of them actually did anything. I silently walked towards Okuyasu's locker, as usual. Soon, he was there too. Together we walked up to the empty classroom.
"They've been nicer, right?" He asked with a smile. "All I've gotten were a few dirty looks all day! No more notes, no more teasing!" He was obviously relieved and excited. I chuckled. It was adorable. I grabbed ahold of his hand and smiled.
"They really have been nicer. Apparently Koichi had Yukako talk to them." I told him, throwing up air quotations as I did. He gasped and covered his mouth. Looks like he things the same thing I was thinking before."She didn't kill someone, did she?" He asked with a horrified expression. Just like myself, he knew exactly how crazy Yukako could get. I shook my head from side to side, and he let out a relieved sigh.
"She did yell though, and you know how terrifying she can be." I replied with a chuckle. A shiver ran down my spine. One time I told her that Koichi didn't always need to be attached to her hip and she completely freaked out. She's kinda scary.
"Yikes, I feel kind of bad now, actually. Do you think we should say something to them?" He asked nervously. He was such a sweet guy. One of the reasons I now know I love him.
"Nah, let 'em be afraid." I told him with a chuckle. He nudged me and giggled. "What? They're mean! Just a few assholes who deserve it anyway!" Okuyasu continued to laugh as he shook his head.
"Fine, but nobody deserves to be threatened by her. She's a terrifying bitch." He said with a laugh. He sat on the sill of an open window and sighed. I sat beside him and laid my head on his shoulder. "I love you." He whispered to me before he gave me a kiss on the forehead. I blushed and smiled.
"I love you too, cutie." I mumbled. I looked up to him and quickly kissed his chin. "And ain't nothin' gonna change that."
"Nothin'?" He asked with a smile. "You promise?"
"Yeah, I promise." I replied. I smiled widely to him. Things are good. For once, I didn't feel afraid, I felt good. Completely good. He muttered out a soft 'good' before giving me a soft kiss.
I could get used to living like this.
Fin.
